It is MAAC Day around here again, so today, we are headed to beautiful Niagara Falls for my Friday night selection. The Purple Eagles have been playing their best basketball lately, earning wins from 6 of their last 7 games, and I am surprised they are only laying a bucket of chalk at home against Marist.
I have been following the MAAC my entire life, as you all know, and fading Marist when they hit the road is something I have done for more years than I can mention. I am amazed, however, that the Red Foxes are 4 – 5 away from home this year, but that’s not going to save them in Niagara tonight.
These two teams are neck-and-neck in the MAAC standings, holding fourth and fifth place respectively entering the weekend.
The Eagles are doing it with impressive 3-point shooting, and Head Coach Greg Paulus has made sure his team takes their time at the free-throw line. Niagara ranks 2nd in the nation shooting the rock behind the arc, and as a team, they are converting 41% from distance. Niagara ranks 18th in the land from the charity stripe,
I am impressed with the youth movement for Paulus’ bunch because only two Seniors on this roster are making solid contributions to the team effort. True Freshman Ahmad Henderson is leading the Purple Eagles with a 14.4 PPG, and he leads a program with four players averaging double-digits this season.
The most impressive stat for Marist, and let’s be honest, it’s about their only real strong suit, is the defensive side of the ball. The Foxes are holding their opponents to an average of 61.9 PPG, which ranks them 7th in the nation. Then we turn to the offensive side of the ball and the stats get ugly.
Marist struggles to average 64.2 PPG, and they are one of the worst free-throw shooting teams in the entire country. Ranking 349th making 63.7% of their shots from the line, it makes it tough for them to stay in close games because teams will gladly foul them just to put them there!
