While we had three games to choose from on Thursday night, it’s Phoenix Mercury vs Connecticut Sun bet builder tips that caught our eye. Two teams at the opposite end of the WNBA standings are tipping off in the early hours of Friday morning, so we’ve put together a three-leg wager at a tantalising price…
US, WNBA, 11th August, 03:00 (UK)
Odds via Bet365 as at 12:00, 10th August 2023. Odds may now differ.
The Sun have covered the spread more frequently than any other team in the league. Their last three games have all ended in wins by 10 or more points, and they are rightly heavy favourites over the Mercury despite slipping up when the teams last met.
Phoenix has improved its record of late, but part of that is down to a favourable schedule. They still suffered losses to the Storm, Fever and Sky, which shows this team remains one of the weaker outfits in the Association.
Connecticut is one of the league’s truly elite teams, sitting third in net rating, far clear of fourth place. We like their chances of covering this number.
The Sun boast the league’s best defence over the last 10 games. These two teams have played at the slowest pace in the league across that span, which is why we think the 160.5 line is on the high side.
Just 142 points were scored when they last met. The Sun have gone under this number in each of their last three games, while the Mercury average the fewest points scored per game this season. As much as their offence has improved, Phoenix has their work cut out to put up big numbers against this exceptional Sun defence.
While the under certainly represents the value in the total points market, we are also expecting both teams to score 60+ points, which nudges the price of this wager from 3.60 to 4.20.
For all their woes this season, the Mercury have scored at least 62 points in every single game. They have scored exactly 91 in each of their last three, and have scored under 70 just once since 7th July. Yes, there will be fewer possessions with the slow pace, but these offences are still efficient enough to reach the 60-point mark.
