The Kansas Jayhawks arrive in Lubbock as slight underdogs when they take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Monday night. The status of Kansas guard Kevin McCullar is in question, and that could make life difficult on the road for the 4th-ranked Jayhawks.
The Raiders are sightly favoured at 1.74 odds to win this one and the Jayhawks are priced at 2.15 odds. The total points line is at 147.0 and the handicap is 2.0 points.
Unless these two programs meet in the Big-12 Conference Tournament, this will be the only meeting between Kansas and Texas Tech, and the Red Raiders are eager to improve to 13 – 1 on their home court this campaign.

In this Article:
The expected absence of Kansas guard Kevin McCullar Jr. will test the depth of the Jayhawk roster, as their leading scorer and court General will be on the sidelines for a big road game on Monday night.
McCullar sat out of the Baylor game this past Saturday with a knee injury, but we have to give credit to the Jayhawks for earning a tough-battled win over the Bears without him, 64 – 61. The Baylor win came after losing to rival Kansas State, 75 – 70, and without McCullar Kansas Head Coach Bill Self still only used 7 players to get that job done.
Depth is a major issue for Kansas, as I mentioned last week if you read that preview, but they have still maintained a #4 National ranking even though they are in third place in the Big-12 standings. Already with 4 conference losses in Big-12 play, Kansas is in trouble tonight because Texas Tech is deep, and Kansas cannot keep winning with only 6 players every night.
Hunter Dickinson was the Jayhawks’ leading scorer against Baylor with 15 points, and that is nearly four points under his 18.7 PPG this year. Kansas only got 3 points from their two bench players against Baylor, and the real pressure now turns to Johnny Furphy and DeJuan Harris.
The two starting guards will have to replace everything that McCullar can do and then some, but they only combine to average 8 points a night each this year. Furphy doesn’t average one assist per game this year, and when your guards aren’t finding their big men up front, that usually is a bad sign.
While the Kansas situation is what it is, one thing that can happen tonight is that Texas Tech can pass the Jayhawks in the Big-12 standings with a win tonight. Kansas is 7 – 4 and Texas Tech is 6 – 4 in conference play, so they could change places when the Red Raiders win this home game. Expect the crowd to plow onto the court when the Red Raiders win this game 73 – 68, and that will be enough to cash our -2 Handicap in Lubbock on Monday night.
