It’s a new week, so it’s time to start a new winning streak, and our resident college basketball expert Ej Garr brings us to the City of Brotherly Love for his Monday bet. Highlighting an afternoon game in Philadelphia, the La Salle Explorers and St. Joe’s Hawks will square off for an Atlantic-10 showdown, and Ej likes the bundle of points we get to put in our pockets for this contest with the road team.

The Monday college hoops schedule isn’t filled with many high-profile games, as it is a Holiday here in the States. We don’t take days off around here, so I am turning to the Atlantic-10 Conference because I was shocked to see La Salle getting so many points against St. Joe’s.
I was expecting to see more like an 8-point line because neither of these programs is playing well at the moment, and the defensive side of the ball is certainly why.
Don’t be misled by that ranking of #10 when it comes to St. Joe’s ranking in opponent’s FG%, because they are nearly dead last in the rankings when it comes to guarding the arc. Teams are attempting nearly 29 3-point shots against St. Joe’s because the room is there to shoot them and they simply don’t get out there and guard.
La Salle ranks 71st in the nation converting just under 9 3-point shots per game, and I assume they will be taking at least another 25 shots from behind the arc tonight. That is what they average, and when you get to play a team that struggles covering the long ball you have got to take full advantage of it.
Jhamir Brickus is converting 43% of his shots from distance this season, as he and Khalil Brantley lead this squad averaging just under 15 points per outing. Brickus has been a double-digit scorer in 14 of the Explorers’ 17 games, and he is riding a 6-game streak of 10+-point games.
Andres Marrero is the guy to watch for La Salle tonight. Although he only averages 8.2 PPG this season, I have a gut feeling that he will be putting up at least 12 shots from behind the arc tonight. He will splash home 5 or 6 of those and end up with 20 points, and if you ask me how I know this you will just have to watch it play out.
This will be a close game all night long, and I will tell you that I never just put underdogs on the board to cover handicaps. I need to think that my dog can win outright and I do think that La Salle is going to give St. Joe’s all they can handle at home tonight. Expect a much tighter game than the line setters want to lead you to believe, and let’s start the week with a winner from the City of Brotherly Love on Monday!
Erik Reynolds II is the leader of this Hawks team, as he already has banked six 20-point games this year, and has yet to be held under double-digit scoring. Reynolds is one of 5 Hawks players averaging double-digit production this campaign, and this team knows how to shoot from outside the arc as well as any program in the nation.
St. Joe’s ranks 5th in 3-point attempts and 6th in made 3-point shots, and that is why they average just under 78 PPG for the season. This game is going to break the record for attempted 3-point shots, so I just hope they fall because I am taking this Over tonight too.
The last time I tried to offer a SGP I had half of it right which did us no good, but if you are in the mood on Monday to try it again, put in the +11.5 and the Over 148.5 in a little combo to cash a nice ticket. See you tomorrow, and I hope I am reporting that we cashed this puppy to start the week!
