ST. PETER’S PEACOCKS VS RIDER BRONCS PICKS AND PREDICTION

If you were with me last Friday, you know I have proclaimed it MAAC day here at bettingexpert for the rest of the regular season. Well, I see a Thursday night contest being played in the conference, so I figured we might as well go back-to-back and belly-to-belly for the next two days, and end the week with two bets from the MAAC!

First of all, I would love to thank the Kansas State head coach for blowing our money last night. With 2 minutes left in a 4-point game, Jerome Tang picked up a Technical Foul, and the Wildcats fell completely apart as a result down the stretch. So, I apologize for going near the Big 12 to start the week because now I am 0 – 3 and I’m not happy about it!

Hopefully, now I can get in my comfort zone with two days of MAAC basketball to dish out, so let me tell you why I chose this total in New Jersey tonight.

St. Peter’s is 7 – 1 over their last 8 games, and they did a great job rebounding from that loss to Fairfield with a win over Canisius this past Sunday, 70 – 59. On paper, I imagine that there are a few bettors out there wondering why Rider isn’t worth a look at +7 because they are the team that averages nearly 72 points a game.

The Peacocks offense only averages 65.8 PPG, and that ranks them 338th in the nation in scoring. St. Peter’s does rank 23rd in the country holding opponents to an average of 64.2 PPG, but all of those low numbers come from how they started the campaign.

The Peacocks were held in the 50s or lower in 5 of their first 8 games, and those numbers have changed since then. Since last being held to 59 points against Duquesne on December 9, The Peacocks have not been held under 67 points over their last 8 games. I pay much more attention to what is happening now when it comes to working in averages because matchups and non-conference play is a different animal.

We are in conference play from here on out now, and St. Peter’s has enjoyed being in or tied for the top spot in the MAAC standings since their opening win over Iona. Now they are tied with Quinnipiac at 6 – 1 coming into this week, and I see this as a high-scoring game between two teams that can score now that MAAC play has arrived.

Hell, look at all of those ugly stats on the defensive side of the ball for Rider, because they are noticeable. The Broncs sit in the 307th spot of the defensive rankings allowing 76.9 PPG, and that is why their Over is 11 – 6 in their lined games this campaign.

The Peacocks’ poor offensive start to the season also aligns with the emergence of Corey Washington of late. Washington was held under double-digits in 5 of the first 9 Peacock outings, and only once did he score more than 12 points during that early stretch. Now, you’ll notice is averaging 14.7 PPG and leading the squad coming off his fifth game with over 20 points scored.

The Peacocks go nine-deep in the rotation, so they can keep fresh bodies on the court and ride hot hands when they arrive at the show, especially at home.

If you haven’t heard of Mervin James, you obviously don’t follow the MAAC! James is in his fifth year and his third with the Broncs, and all he’s done is average double digits his entire career! Now sporting an impressive 19.1 PPG, he’s converting 51% of his shots from the floor and 41.7% of his shots from behind the arc.

Washington and James are both worth the price of admission, and I believe they will each grab 20+ points battling back and forth tonight. I know the supporting casts will do their parts, so a total of 134 should be no problem for us on Thursday night in the MAAC!

74 – 70 is my call, and I do expect Rider to hang around and cover even though they usually struggle on the road to get anything accomplished.
