The Texas Southern Tigers are listed as slight home favourites on Monday night, as they will take on the first-place Southern Jaguars trying to hold on to the top seed headed for the SWAC Tournament. With only five games left to play before the SWAC Tournament, Southern leads the pack with a 10 – 2 record, and a big road win would get them that much closer to the 1 seed!
The Texas Southern Tigers are listed as slight home favourites at -1.5 on the Handicap, and the total is listed at 138.5.

Ej’s Texas Southern vs Southern prediction is for the Jaguars to cash the Moneyline on the road.
The Jaguars will win this basketball game on Monday night in Houston but the line setters want to try to convince you that the home team could win this game. Depending on when you read this article, this line could be a pick ‘em situation with just a winner to pick to cash in the ticket.
I see a -1.5-point Handicap for the Tigers at home at a handful of reputable sports books, and Bet365 shows a -1 at 1.87 and the Moneyline at 1.91. So, as I hand this article in from New York at about 9 PM EST, I see 1.95 for the Jaguars’ Moneyline, and that’s fine with me. I will pay the nickel juice to have the Jags because they are the better team and they will prove as much again on Monday.
Brandon Davis and Tai’reon Joseph carry the load for the Jaguars, as Joseph is averaging over 20 PPG this campaign, and only once has he been held under double-digit scoring this entire season. Joseph is coming off a game where he only played 21 minutes, which is below his average of 32 minutes a night but still scored 15 points in the win over Alcorn State, 71 – 70. Joseph left that game with an injury, and he has yet to return to the lineup having missed the last four games for the Jags.
What that has done is prove that the Jaguars have some depth, as they have won their last seven games coming into Houston ahead of steam, even if Joseph is a no-go again. I don’t see him listed as out for this game, so maybe he is expected back tonight keep an eye out for that news closer to game time.
Regardless, Jags Head Coach Kevin Johnson goes 12 deep into his roster, and you see he spreads out the minutes to his entire team. Johnson has 14 players averaging over 8 minutes on the court a game, and Brandon Davis got the memo about picking up his game lately. With Joseph out, Davis hasn’t scored less than 16 points over the last 4 games, and it’s boosted his average to 12.4 PPG for the campaign.

The Tigers are in a 3-way tie for third place in the SWAC standings, and with only 6 games left to play including tonight’s game, every game will be full of pressure from here on out.
The Tigers’ offence ranks 347th in the nation converting only 39.7% of their field goals, and they also rank 339th in the country with a poor 29.7% from behind the arc.
The Jaguars take a 7-game win streak into Houston to face the Tigers on Monday night, and they have been without their leading scorer for the last 4 games.
Southern is 2 – 0 in the last two meetings in Houston, and they are 3 – 1 in the last 4 meetings with Texas Southern.
The Southern defense will be the difference in this game, as they rank 4th in the country in turning teams over, and 7th in the nation in steals.
