Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad Best Bet: Tuesday May 17th
Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL Best Bet
Tuesday, May 17th, 3pm (UK time)
Captains Rohit Sharma and Kane Williamson find themselves out of nick, out of ideas and ultimately out of time as both their franchises crawl towards the end of disappointing IPL campaigns.
Williamson’s Sunrisers Hyderabad side have followed five successive victories with a run of five heavy defeats, in which the Kiwi opener has flattered to deceive, striking at a sluggish 92.85.
For Mumbai, a glimmer of normality returned as they dismantled CSK for just 97 last time out, but even though they dropped the under-performing Kieron Pollard, their XI remains unbalanced and lacks depth.
For this reason, I’m steering clear of either franchise in the outright market, and instead turning my attentions towards Aiden Markram who has proven a revelation in the Sunrisers underperforming batting line-up.
The South African, who had played just one prior season in the IPL with Punjab, has remained Hyderabad’s most consistent performer, notching up an impressive 358 runs from number four.
He has also averaged a shade above 59 from his 10 innings, which is accompanied by a healthy strike rate of 141, proving himself to be the glue that this batting line up dearly needs.
In their five successive losses he recorded scores of 32, 21, 42, 17 and 56, highlighting that he has no problems getting himself in, but more knuckling down to secure a match winning score.
In what could be a low scoring encounter between two bowling-orientated sides which include the mightily impressive Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, a 40 or 50 should be enough to claim top Sunrisers bat, or even top match batsman.
Considering that Markram is 2.20 to score 30+ runs – which could come close to winning the market – the 4.00 on offer for top team batsman looks like value.
Mumbai’s Tilak Varma, who has recently been promoted to number three following a stellar season puts me off tipping Markram for the top match batsman, but the Proteas youngster in the man of the match market at 13.00 could be well worth a punt.
