Genesis Scottish Open Preview

Thursday, 13th July, 07:00 (UK)

The Renaissance Club hosts the Scottish Open for the fifth consecutive year but this is only the second time the event has been co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour.

Prior to last year’s event, the course had played as a par 71 but the seventh hole was changed from a par 5 to a par 4 for the 2022 edition. That change is once again in place and the course will play as a par 70. The official yardage this week is 7,237 yards but we may see that play slightly differently each day.

Tom Doak is the course designer at The Renaissance Club and it is a modern links test. Several holes on the back nine render themselves exposed to the elements and the weather can certainly play a significant factor in scoring.

Last year saw firm and fast conditions, with glorious sunshine on each of the four days. That isn’t the case this year, with rain softening the greens before the start of the event and rain showers expected throughout. Add in 20mph winds on Sunday and the weather could have a significant say in who wins the week before The Open Championship.

A solid all round game is needed at Renaissance with a slight preference on approach play. The rough is likely to be thicker than last year so extra emphasis is placed on keeping the ball on the shorter grass off the tee.

Xander Schauffele was world number 11 when lifting the trophy last year. However, the three winners prior to him were all ranked outside the world’s top 80. It should be acknowledged that the field strength was considerably weaker in those years and it will be a shock were we to see a winner emerge from outside the world’s top 80 this week.

Genesis Scottish Open Best Bet

Scottie Scheffler is the 7/1 favourite but he’s an easy one to overlook given his missed cut in this event last year (one of only three in the whole of 2022) and a 21st place finish here in 2021. Many of the world’s best will be fine tuning their game to the nuances of links golf this week and I’m happy to brush over Scheffler and others at the very front of the market.

There will be plenty of home support for Robert MacIntyre this week and he is certainly a player who was at the forefront of my thoughts this week. MacIntyre looked in total control of the Made in Himmerland last week until one crooked drive caused a triple bogey and led him to slip back to fourth. If he can bounce back from that disappointment he’s certainly got a shout on a course where he has previously posted two top 20 finishes in damp conditions. Odds of 91.00 with bet365 will certainly tempt some in.

It’s a big if though and he may well be one to watch once play gets underway. Instead, I prefer the chances of a player who is vying with MacIntyre for a place on Europe’s Ryder Cup team. Alex Noren is a past winner of this event, having triumphed in 2016 at Castle Stuart.

That win in 2016 was one of four in the British Isles on Noren’s CV and it’s clear he loves teeing it up in this part of the world. Runner up at the Alfred Dunhill Links last October, he has a stellar record in that event (three top three finishes), demonstrating his love of links golf. His Open Championship record isn’t too shabby either, with four top 20 finishes in his last seven starts.

He placed 30th at The Renaissance Club in his only start here in 2022 but that’s encouragement enough for me. Noren will be all the better for a run out last year and it was notable that his round one score was his worst of the week. That finish also came on the back of three missed cuts in his previous four starts, something that doesn’t apply this time around.

In terms of recent form, Noren finished ninth last time out at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and it’s notable that his approach play has been a strength in each of his last two starts. Take the 81.00 on Noren with bet365 for eight each way places.  A special offer for this event and in a market that has plenty of choices.

We’ve even got the benefit of bet365’s Winnings Boost feature here, providing us a 25% boost to these already long odds.  That is only eligible in specific circumstances so be sure to check the terms and conditions on the site.

  • Selection: Alex Noren EW (1/5 1-8)
  • Best Odds: 81.00 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 1/10

Odds via bet365 as at 12.45 July 11th 2023. Odds may now differ.
