John Deere Classic Preview

Thursday, 6th July, 12:00 (UK)

TPC Deere Run is once again the host course for the John Deere Classic. Traditionally played the week before The Open, the event now finds itself moved forward one week to allow for the co-sanctioned Scottish Open.

Just as it has in previous years, the course will play as a par 71, with a maximum length of 7,289 yards. We’ve seen low scoring the past two weeks on the PGA Tour and this week will be no exception. Only once since 2014 has the winning score been worse than -19 and Michael Kim triumphed with a score of -27 in 2018.

D.A. Weibring’s course design was tinkered with slightly last year. Many of the bunkers were reconstructed and repositioned. It did little to affect the way the course plays though and course form can be relied upon. Holing putts on the bentgrass greens is the key to success.

The weather forecast indicates that rain is likely Wednesday and Thursday, with further rain possible over the weekend. A soft course should give the players plenty of scoring opportunities and it would be no surprise to see a score of at least 20 under par win this week.

Only nine of the world’s top 50 tee it up this week and we could well see a shock winner. The last four winners of the John Deere Classic have been outside the world’s top 90 ranked players.

John Deere Classic Best Bet

Denny McCarthy and Russell Henley are the rightful favourites given the fact both have excellent recent form and both have top ten finishes at this event in previous years. However, neither are prolific winners and I’m more than happy to search for a bit of value further down the betting.

Brendon Todd, Adam Svensson and Davis Thompson were three players I considered strongly this week and I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off Thompson at 101.0. A former amateur star, Thompson finished 24th last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He gained strokes in all areas of his game apart from around the green and must be considered a threat on his debut in this event.

For all that I like Thompson, Nick Hardy is the player who ranks as my best bet this week. Odds of 81.0 with bet365 for eight each way places are sufficiently tempting for a player who also had a stellar amateur career and has got off to a fast start as a professional.

Hardy describes this as his “favourite event of the year” and will enjoy plenty of local support with this being his home event. Hardy was raised and went to college in Illinois and that’s certainly shown in his performances in this event. He’s yet to miss a cut in three starts at the John Deere, two of which came when he was an amateur. Last year’s 30th place finish was his best result to date at TPC Deere Run and he can be expected to improve upon that this time around.

Hardy returns home having won the Zurich Classic earlier this year with Davis Riley and must surely be looking for his first solo win. A relative newcomer to the PGA Tour (this is only his second season), Hardy is often disadvantaged with a lack of course knowledge. That certainly isn’t the case this week.

Hardy missed the cut last week, largely due to a poor opening round. A second round 69 was likely a better reflection of where his game currently is given he posted a 20th place finish at the US Open only three starts ago. Take Hardy to mount a challenge in familiar surroundings.

  • Selection: Nick Hardy EW
  • Best Odds: 81.00 (bet365)
