Rocket Mortgage Classic Preview
Thursday, 29th June, 12:00 (UK)
The Rocket Mortgage Classic returns to Detroit Golf Club for the fifth year in a row. A Donald Ross design, Detroit GC has seen low scoring in each of the previous renewals. Aside from 2021 (where 18 under par was enough to win), the winning score has been at least 23 under par. Players will need to make plenty of birdies if they are to win this week.
Small bentgrass-poa greens ensure a premium on greens in regulation. However, the four par five holes offer scoring opportunities and there are plenty of short par 4 holes.
Just as it has in previous years, Detroit GC will play as a par 72, stretching to 7,370 yards. With conditions likely to be a little softer underfoot, it could well play to that length and shorter hitters may be at a disadvantage this week.
Severe storms damaged the course at the start of this week and we may see further weather interruptions during the tournament. Rain is forecast for several days and the weather forecast indicates thunderstorms may be possible on Saturday.
Eight of the ten best players in the world were in action at TPC River Highlands last week but only one of the world’s top ten has made the trip to Detroit Golf Club. Defending champion, Tony Finau, and resurgent Rickie Fowler head up the betting at 15.0. Finau comes into the event out of form, whilst Fowler has finished inside the top 15 in seven of his last eight starts.
Rocket Mortgage Classic Best Bet
Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler may head up the betting but it was Justin Thomas that came closest to getting my vote from the top of the market this week. Thomas finished 9th last week at the Travelers Championship to end a poor run of form and he looked much improved tee to green. Third behind Scottie Scheffler and Patrick Cantlay in the SG: Tee to Green stats last week, JT was once again sharp with his irons. He’s a big danger this week.
Thomas has yet to tee it up at Detroit Golf Club though and that lack of course experience was the deciding factor in his omission this week.
If Thomas has a lack of course experience, Sepp Straka has it in abundance. The world number 37 has played in each of the four Rocket Mortgage Classics and boasts a couple of top twelve finishes from those four starts.
Straka was 14th last week in SG: Off The Tee, ranking 3rd for Driving Accuracy. Driving has been a particular strength for the Austrian in recent weeks and he can utilise that strength off the tee in the softer conditions that are likely to be prevalent this week.
Straka’s approach play has been the one area letting him down of late but encouraging displays at The Memorial and PGA Championship show he’s perhaps not too far away from putting it all together. The weeks where he’s gained strokes on approach have yielded big finishes.
A winner already on the PGA Tour, Straka shouldn’t fear too many players in this field. There are only eleven players ahead of Straka in the world rankings this week and he’s a nice price to mount a challenge. Odds of 56.0 with eight each way places are available with bet365 at the time of writing.
Finally, bet365 are offering a ‘Score Cut Made At’ market this week which may be worth a closer look. The odds on the cut being made at over 140 shots are 2.38 and that bet has cashed in each of the past two events held at Detroit Golf Club. Soft conditions should make for slightly lower scoring this time around but the price is sufficiently tempting to merit further consideration.
