Travelers Championship Preview

Thursday, 22nd June, 12:00 (UK)

TPC River Highlands is once again the host course for the Travelers Championship. Having hosted since 1984, it is a course familiar to players and fans alike. This year’s event welcomes a top class field, the Travelers Championship having been upgraded to an elevated event as part of the 2023 PGA Tour schedule.

TPC River Highlands underwent a redesign by Pete Dye in 1982 and was then subject to further changes in 1989 when Bobby Weed and PGA Tour Design Services carried out a second renovation. Not much has changed in the intervening years, aside from changes to the putting surface several years ago.

Small poa annua greens offer some form of defence but low scoring is common at TPC River Highlands. This was the course where Jim Furyk shot a 58 in 2016 and the field scoring average in each of the last five years has been under par.

TPC River Highlands is a par 70, playing to a maximum of 6,852 yards. Around 600 yards shorter than last week’s par 70 test at Los Angeles Country Club, both longer hitters and shorter hitters can compete.

World number one, Scottie Scheffler, heads up the betting this week at 8.0. Scheffler continued his remarkable run of form last week at the US Open, notching a third place finish. That was his fifth consecutive top five finish.

We may well see rain this week and the weather forecast indicates thunderstorms may be possible at the weekend.

Travelers Championship Best Bet

Jordan Spieth and Cameron Smith (who wouldn’t be eligible to play anyway) are the only two players missing from the world’s top 10 this week. Elevated events on the PGA Tour have generally gone to players within the world’s top 50, with Wyndham Clark being the exception to that trend. With another stacked field, it’s hard to see a shock winner.

Six of the last seven winners of the Travelers Championship have been inside the world’s top 30 and Kevin Streelman (2014) was the last player to triumph in this event from outside the world’s top 50. I’m not looking too far down the betting for a winner.

Russell Henley made plenty of appeal this week given his course record includes three top 20 finishes from five starts. He’s also finished inside the top 20 in each of his last three starts. However, the 36.0 available on the American felt a fraction short.

Instead, it is Tom Kim who rates as my favourite bet this week. Kim got off to a slow start at last week’s US Open, posting an opening round 73. However, three rounds in the 60’s followed, the highlight of which was Saturday’s round of 66.

Kim is making his debut at TPC River Highlands but is a two time winner on the PGA Tour in low scoring contests. His two wins to date have come with winning scores of 20 and 24 under par, and with low scoring set to be the order of the day this week, he’s sure to enjoy the test.

The youngster’s stats last week were an indication that his game is in a good place, ranking 4th for SG: Approach and 11th for SG: Tee to Green. Take the 41.0 with eight each way places in bet365’s outright market.

Finally, it may be worth taking on Wyndham Clark in bet365’s Make The Cut market. Clark missed the cut at the PGA Championship on his next start after winning the Wells Fargo Championship and we could well see a repeat after his US Open heroics.

Clark has missed the cut three times in five attempts at TPC River Highlands and whilst it is acknowledged that he’s a much better player now, he may well struggle after last week’s exertions. Take the 2.75 available for him to miss the cut.

  • Selection: Tom Kim EW
  • Best Odds: 41.00 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 1/10

Odds via bet365 as at 09:00 on June 21st 2023. Odds may now differ.
