Wyndham Championship Preview

Thursday, 3rd August, 12:00 (UK)

Sedgefield Country Club hosts the Wyndham Championship once again, having done so for each Wyndham Championship since 2008. A Donald Ross design, it is a classical tree lined test.

At 7,131 yards, Sedgefield will play as a par 70, just as it has in previous years. As with all Ross designs, small greens with plenty of undulation are the primary defence of the course.

Six of the last seven Wyndham Championships have been won with a score of -20 or better, Kevin Kisner’s win in 2021 being the outlier. Expect low scoring once again this week, with strong approach play needed to set up plenty of birdie opportunities.

Rain and thunderstorms could disrupt the opening rounds but the weather forecast looks better over the weekend and the final two rounds should be unaffected.

This is the final event of the regular PGA Tour season, with players playing for the opportunity to progress to the FedEx playoffs which begin next week. Only the top 70 in the rankings will progress to the playoffs. As expected, the field is stacked with players who are either just inside the top 70, and therefore trying to secure their place, or players just outside the top 70 and looking to move inside the magic number with a good week.

Wyndham Championship Best Bet

It’s worth stating from the outset that the four players at the front of the market all have strong course records but none of them have been firing on all cylinders of late and they look worth taking on. With all four looking to find form ahead of the playoffs, I’m content to see how they start with a view to backing them in play.

Before I get to my best bet this week, there are several bets worth highlighting with bet365. In five of the last six Wyndham Championships, the lowest score of the week has been 61 or lower. Bet365 have priced up a round of 61 or better this week at 2.3 and I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off a small bet on that.

Jason Dufner is an outsider who is worth considering for the top 30 or top 40 markets. The veteran American has been held back by a poor putter for a number of years now but he’s gained strokes on the greens in each of his last three starts. That’s led to a three consecutive top 31 finishes and he’s available at 6.5 with bet365 to record a top 30 finish this week. Dufner has three top 30 finishes from his last eight starts at Sedgefield.

Returning to the outright market, it is Chesson Hadley who makes most appeal at odds of 101.0. A North Carolina native, Hadley has posted finishes of 15th and 8th the past two years at Sedgefield. Rounds of 64 and 62 in those years show he can score here and he appears to have cracked the code after struggling for many years.

Hadley’s recent form is encouraging too. A sixth place finish two starts ago at the Barracuda was backed up with a 27th place finish at last week’s 3M Open. That 27th place finish could easily have been better considering Hadley ranked 14th for SG: Tee to Green.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that Hadley is 126th in the FedEx rankings. A top 10 or top 20 isn’t going to be enough to progress to next week’s playoffs. With that in mind he’s sure to be giving it his all this week and looking for a win in front of his home fans. Take Hadley with eight each way places with bet365’s Each Way Extra market.

  • Selection: Chesson Hadley EW (1/5 1-8)
  • Best Odds: 101.00 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 1/10

Odds via bet365 as at 15.55 August 1st 2023. Odds may now differ.
