There are six scheduled meetings in Britain and Ireland on a very busy Friday, with NH fans in for a brilliant afternoon on Gold Cup day at the festival. The 2023 winner Galopin des Champs is back to defend his crown, and he is a short price to finish off a fantastic week for Willie Mullins. They also have supporting jumps cards at Fakenham and Ffos Las, while AW followers have Dundalk, Newcastle and Wolverhampton under lights in the evening to look forward to.

Cheltenham 4.50 (UK time)
Willie Mullins 7-y-o mare went straight into the notebook when finishing second in the Grand Annual at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, racing freely and doing too much in the middle of the race, but still finishing a cracking 2nd/19 behind Maskada. She has loads of natural ability when it can be channeled effectively, with 5 wins so far from 9 runs over fences, and could be a class above these mares if dropping the bridle in the early stages of this 2m4f prize (coming here fresh after a cracking second behind El Fabiolo at the Dublin Racing Festival in February).

Gidleigh Park
Cheltenham 2.50 (UK time)
Harry Fry’s scopey novice remains open to plenty more improvement as his jumping gains racing experience, and the increased test of stamina of this Grade 1 promises to unlock further progress. He maintained his unbeaten record over timber with a workmanlike win at Cheltenham in January (slow pace masking his superiority in a small field), and the soft ground at this near three mile trip should suit ideally under regular rider Jonathan Burke. A positive ride is on the cards, and he can strike a rare blow for UK trainers after a very disappointing week.

Time (UK) | Odds | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:30 | 2.75 | Sir Gino | Scopey youngster who looked a top class performer in the making when winning a hot Triumph trial at this track last time out. With Henderson under a cloud at the moment, his price has become a lot more appealing this week. |
2:10 | 11.00 | L’eau du Sud | Dan Skelton has a brilliant record in this prestigious festival handicap, and his unexposed performer served notice with a cracking effort last time out. |
3:30 | 2.25 | Galopin des Champs | The reigning Champion has plenty in hand over these rivals, and should be extremely hard to beat under regular rider Paul Townend. He impressed when winning the 2023 renewal and has returned better than ever this winter, with the better ground on the chase course sure to suit. |
4:10 | 4.00 | Ferns Lock | Classy, improving young hunter comes here on the upgrade and has been very well backed by the right faces in the last few weeks. |
5:30 | 9.00 | Better Days Ahead | Improving novice has been laid out to land this ultra competitive curtain-closer to festival week. His opening mark looks lenient, and a strongly run big field handicap will ensure he settles in the early stages for the first time. |
