The second day of the Aintree Grand National meeting is very much the highlight on Friday, with a capacity crowd assured for some top class jumping action (and an early test for the value of the Cheltenham festival form). Elsewhere, there are supporting jump cards at Ballinrobe and Sedgefield, a season opener on the turf at Leicester, and low grade evening action on the all-weather at Dundalk and Southwell.

Nicky Henderson’s exciting novice lost her unbeaten record at Cheltenham in the Grade 2 Mares hurdle, sent off a heavily backed 6/4f but pulling too hard in the early stages parked wide and failing to see things out up the stamina-sapping final climb. She now steps right up in class to Grade 1 company at Aintree on Thursday, but looks well ready for it and should get the strongly run race she needs to settle in the early stages under Nico de Boinville (with this flat track likely to suit her smooth-travelling style better than the undulations of Prestbury Park).

Aintree 2:20 (UK time)
Sam Thomas’s progressive handicapper shaped a lot better than the bare result in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival, and this flat track and slight drop back in trip to 2m4f should both be positives to his chance under the excellent Sam Twiston-Davies. He remains with scope to keep progressing after just eight career runs over hurdles (will make a cracking chaser next season), and revelled in heavy ground when winning at Carlisle last October (which could be a plus if the forecast rain does arrive on Friday).
