There are seven scheduled meetings in Britain and Ireland on a very busy Friday, with NH fans in for an informative afternoon. They have Ayr, Ballinrobe, Exeter, Fontwell and Limerick to study on generally soft ground, with some decent handicaps to try to solve at the Scottish venue as their National meeting gets underway (and Lucinda Russell sure to be well represented). Flat fans have decent grade action to study at Bath and Newbury, with the handicaps looking especially competitive for the time of year and field sizes large at both tracks.
In this article:
Numitor
Ayr 3.20 (UK time)
Heather Main’s stable star has a terrific strike rate, winning 5 of his 16 career starts over fences, and returned to his best when winning a competitive Haydock contest last time out (travelling up strongly in a true run race). His jumping is a real asset when able to dominate proceedings from the tape, and new rider Jonjo O’Neill jnr is sure to be very positive at a track that ideally suits those tactics on the prevailing soft ground.
Odds: 8.00
Castle Rushen
Ayr 2.50 (UK time)
Nicky Richards lightly-raced handicapper has been saved for a spring campaign after just two starts so far this season (both in deep heavy conditions), and his freshness could count for plenty at Ayr on Friday. The booking of Brian Hughes certainly increases confidence that a patient ride from off the pace will be executed to perfection, and the easy ground conditions are certainly in his favour (with a strongly run race on the cards in a big field).
Odds: 13.00
