There are seven scheduled meetings in Britain and Ireland on Friday, with flat fans in for an informative and busy afternoon and evening. They have Ascot, Cork, Chester, Nottingham and Ripon to study on decent ground, with some cracking handicaps to try to solve at the Berkshire venue (and the top yards sure to be well represented for the excellent prize money on offer). Jumps followers have competitive action to study at Market Rasen and Sedgefield, with big fields assured for the time of year and the ground on the faster side after a dry and warm week across the UK.

Roger Varian has hit form with 6 winners in the last 14 days at a 23pc strike rate, and his progressive performer is fancied to make a winning seasonal reappearance at Chester on Friday. He impressed in the mud when landing hefty market confidence at Hamilton last October (under a confident ride from last to first), and seems sure to be fully primed after 221 days on the sidelines (with Silvestre de Sousa riding with confidence after winning the 1000 Guineas for this yard on Sunday).

Chester 3.40 (UK time)
Andrew Balding’s stayer remains with potential after just five starts on the turf (dual winner on the all-weather), and he resumes this season on an attractive handicap mark after rather losing his form last backend. He posted a career best effort when touched off at York last August in a valuable Heritage handicap, looking very unlucky not to prevail having missed the break and suffering a troubled run, and the drying ground conditions expected here should be ideal in a strongly run race (with Oisin Murphy an excellent booking).
Odds: 15.00
