Saturday’s ITV cameras bring us the best of the action from Ascot, Newmarket and York, with a compelling mix of Group action and red hot heritage handicaps for the punters to solve. The Group 1 July Cup is very much the highlight at HQ, with some of the best sprinters in the UK locking horns over six furlongs. This forms part of an 11-race televised extravaganza (on one of the busiest days of the entire summer season on the turf).
In this article:
SONNY LISTON
Ascot 2.20 (UK time)
Ralph Beckett has trained a remarkable 8 winners in the last 14 days at a 20pc strike rate, and his useful performer was huge eyecatcher behind Wild Tiger in the Hunt Cup at the Royal meeting (missed the break and saw no daylight as the leaders quickened clear on the near side). He needs the ground to be on the softer side of good, and a wet week in Berkshire should allow underfoot conditions to be in his favour (just on the easy side of good).
Odds: 4.00
AWAAL
Newmarket 4.00 (UK time)
Simon and Ed Crisford’s classy (if frustrating) handicapper often attracted hefty market interest last season without delivering for punters, but he is definitely well capable of going close from this sort of mark and seems sure to be primed first time up for this prestigious prize (having been a non-runner on a couple of occasions on firm ground in recent weeks). The excellent James Doyle is booked for the ride, and he will be looking to weave his way through late and fast off what seems sure to be a very strong gallop in a competitive renewal of the Bunbury Cup.
Odds: 13.00
Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:45 | Ascot | DREAM COMPOSER | James Evans sprinter had excuses in a muddling Sandown sprint last week, finishing with running left in him from a poor position off a relatively sedate early pace, and this big field Ascot handicap should be much more suitable with Marquand taking over in the saddle. |
2:00 | York | BLUE FOR YOU | David O’Meara has hit form in the past fortnight with 6 winners, and his useful miler has had valid excuses since making a promising reappearance over this course and distance in May. |
2:12 | Newmarket | MISS BODACIOUS | Karl Burke’s scopey filly landed hefty market confidence on her handicap debut over six furlongs here last month, and this step up to 7f should unlock plenty more improvement under Clifford Lee. |
2:20 | Ascot | SONNY LISTON | Ralph Beckett has trained a remarkable 8 winners in the last 14 days at a 20pc strike rate, and his useful performer was huge eyecatcher behind Wild Tiger in the Hunt Cup at the Royal meeting (missed the break and saw no daylight as the leaders quickened clear on the near side). He needs the ground to be on the softer side of good, and a wet week in Berkshire should allow underfoot conditions to be in his favour (just on the easy side of good). |
2:35 | York | ROGUE LIGHTNING | Tom Clover’s sprinter is in a lot better form than his recent form figures suggest (reared leaving the stalls when well held at Royal Ascot on very quick ground), and the softer ground/strong pace at this flat six furlong trip can see him bounce back to form under Danny Tudhope. |
2:50 | Newmarket | GLOBAL SKIES | This handicapper has slipped down the weights a good few pounds this summer, and went into the notebook under a very negative ride at Musselburgh last time out (with Ben Brookhouse red hot 3w/8r in the last fortnight). |
3:10 | York | ASTRO KING | Daniel and Clare Kubler’s warrior had excuses last time out in warm listed company (slow to leave the stalls and run blocked from an impossible position early in the straight), and he is more than capable of taking a hand back into handicaps with conditions to suit. |
3:25 | Newmarket | PENTLE BAY | George Boughey’s colt probably bumped into a superstar when second to Bedtime Story at the Royal meeting, doing well to take a remote second after a slow start and troubled run through behind the ultra impressive winner. |
3:45 | York | SALT BAY | Ralph Beckett’s stayer showed this course and distance suited ideally when a career best second last time out (against a very well ridden front-running winner), and should go really close here under Hector Crouch. |
4:00 | Newmarket | AWAAL | Simon and Ed Crisford’s classy (if frustrating) handicapper often attracted hefty market interest last season without delivering for punters, but he is definitely well capable of going close from this sort of mark and seems sure to be primed first time up for this prestigious prize (having been a non-runner on a couple of occasions on firm ground in recent weeks). The excellent James Doyle is booked for the ride, and he will be looking to weave his way through late and fast off what seems sure to be a very strong gallop in a competitive renewal of the Bunbury Cup. |
4:35 | Newmarket | REGIONAL | Ed Bethell’s classy sprinter has run two cracking races in defeat already this season at Ascot and The Curragh, and looks overpriced at double figures for this valuable Group 1 prize at Newmarket on Saturday. He has plenty of early pace at his disposal, and could take plenty of passing if able to dominate this field from the stalls under regular rider Callum Rodriguez.. |
