Saturday’s ITV cameras provide a feast for punters, with cracking turf action from Doncaster and Newbury (inspection permitting) alongside the opening Cheltenham meeting of the NH season. The Group 1 Futurity at 2.45pm is the highlight in terms of quality, with some of the best 2-y-o’s from the top yards sure to be lining up over the mile trip. Newbury features two fascinating Group 3 contests, while over at Prestbury Park there is a sure to be a big irish representation as the home of jumps racing stages a really competitive card.
In this article:
Red Rookie
Cheltenham 1:15 (UK time)
Emma Lavelle has her team in blistering form as the jumps season kicks up a gear, with 5 winners from 13 runners in the last fortnight. Her useful 8-y-o has won 2 from 8 over fences, and seems sure to be fully primed to make a winning reappearance after five months off the track. The drop back to a strongly run two miles with a bit of cut in the ground should be ideal, and he shaped really well on one previous visit to Cheltenham (cruising round on the bridle until tiring/fell late behind the high class Edwardstone).
Odds: NA
Undersupervision
Cheltenham 2:25 (UK time)
This useful stayer has generally been disappointing in recent seasons, often spoiling his chance with jumping errors, but he is well treated on the best of his form and the Nigel Twiston-Davies yard have been in terrific form in the past month. He has plenty of Cheltenham form in the book, and fresh first time up could be the time to catch him.
Odds: NA

Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
12:55 | Newbury | Blue Lemons | Richard Hannon has maintained an excellent strike rate with his juveniles throughout the entire turf season, and his progressive 2-y-o is worth sticking with now upped in class to Group 3 company at Newbury on Saturday. He revelled in testing ground when losing his maiden tag at Leicester first time out, and this step up back from a mile to seven furlongs should unlock further improvement under Sean Levey. |
1:15 | Cheltenham | Red Rookie | Emma Lavelle has her team in blistering form as the jumps season kicks up a gear, with 5 winners from 13 runners in the last fortnight. |
1:30 | Newbury | Ching Shih | David Simcock’s filly has proved hard to place this season, often shaping well in defeat in warm company, and she certainly caught the eye in the Park Hill Stakes last time out at Doncaster. She moved up smoothly in the straight from a poor position there, our fading out of the places in the final 100 yards, and this drop back to 1m4f definitely looks the right call under Jim Crowley. |
1:50 | Cheltenham | Spirit D’Anjou | Gary Moore’s progressive young hurdler proved a real moneyspinner in the mud last season for these astute connections, and can resume where he left off after 196 sidelines. He landed hefty market confidence with ease in two handicaps at Sandown and Chepstow in the spring, and is ready for this step up in class with underfoot conditions easing suitably. |
2:10 | Doncaster | Dancing Gemini | Roger Teal’s 2-y-o might just be underestimated by the market now stepping up into Group 1 company (especially up against runners from the top yards), and he has impressed in winning two of his four career starts so far. Doncaster on deep ground suited over 7f here last month at listed level (despite racing freely under restraint initially), and he will have no bother with a mile providing he settles better in the early stages. |
2:25 | Cheltenham | Undersupervision | This useful stayer has generally been disappointing in recent seasons, often spoiling his chance with jumping errors, but he is well treated on the best of his form and the Nigel Twiston-Davies yard have been in terrific form in the past month. He has plenty of Cheltenham form in the book, and fresh first time up could be the time to catch him. |
2:45 | Doncaster | Esquire | David O’Meara would not be known for first time out juvenile winners, and it looked significant that this Harry Angel gelding could win despite inexperience at Hamilton in September. He improved dramatically on that effort when just denied at listed level in the mud at York last time out, and his freshness at this late stage of the turf season should be a big positive. |
3:00 | Cheltenham | Dubrovnik Happy | Harry Fry’s handicapper cannot be easy to train given his rare appearances in recent seasons, but he goes well in testing ground and is very well handicapped on the pick of his form if all is well after a break. |
3:20 | Doncaster | Abdustion | Jim Goldie’s sprinter handles deep conditions really well and returned to his best form when second at Ayr last time out, travelling really strongly throughout but just finding his front-running stablemate Be Proud impossible to pass. He has optimum conditions again at Doncaster on Saturday, and represents decent value at a double figure price under regular rider Shane Gray. |
