The start of the flat season at Doncaster is very much the highlight of the ITV coverage on Saturday, with the Lincoln handicap at 3.35pm sure to be the big betting race of the afternoon on soft ground. NH fans have some cracking races to solve from Bangor and Newbury, with the Grade 2 Mares finale at 3.15pm a high quality renewal with all the top UK yards represented. There are 8 televised races in total, with plenty of rain in the forecast and punters are advised to check the ground conditions (and any non-runners) before placing their each-way bets.
In this article:
Drumlee Spud
Newbury 3:15 (UK time)
Ben Pauling remains in terrific form after a winning week at the Festival, and his talented mare is fancied to land this valuable Grade 2 prize. She remains open to loads more improvement after just three runs over hurdles (useful bumper form previously), and she looks on a very attractive opening handicap mark if proving more settled in the early stages of her races (with Beau Morgan taking off a very handy 5lb).
Odds: 9.00
Gustavian
Newbury 2:40 (UK time)
Anthony Honeyball’s handicapper posted a career best effort when finishing third over this course and distance last time out, jumping fluently from the front at a brisk pace and just tiring before the last behind Heltenham. He has generously been dropped 2lb for that run, and another attacking ride from Sam Twiston-Davies could soon take these rivals out of their comfort zone in the early stages.
Odds: 7.00
Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:20 | Doncaster | Holloway Boy | Karl Burke’s useful performer proved hard to train last turf season, only making it to the track on two occasions (running a cracker when fourth in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot in June). He retains all of his ability, and this mile on soft ground would be his optimum on his seasonal reappearance after 9 months off. |
1:30 | Bangor-on-dee | Cheddleton | This tough and versatile handicapper showed a terrific attitude under pressure to return to winning form last time out, and could be very hard to pass round this sharp inner hurdle course at Bangor on Saturday. |
2:10 | Newbury | Idy Wood | Jamie Snowden’s handicapper had been progressing nicely until struggling in Grade 2 company at Kempton last time out, and a return to this more galloping track should suit ideally under regular rider Gavin Sheehan. He remains with upside in handicaps, and this strongly run race should set things up nicely for him to pounce late on. |
2:25 | Doncaster | Maysong | Fitness may count for plenty as the turf season gets underway, and Alice Haynes 7-y-o comes into this on the back of two cracking efforts in defeat on the all-weather. Christian Howarth is booked for the ride, and he is very much a young claimer to follow over the next few months as the turf season gets underway. |
2:40 | Newbury | Gustavian | Anthony Honeyball’s handicapper posted a career best effort when finishing third over this course and distance last time out, jumping fluently from the front at a brisk pace and just tiring before the last behind Heltenham. He has generously been dropped 2lb for that run, and another attacking ride from Sam Twiston-Davies could soon take these rivals out of their comfort zone in the early stages. |
3:00 | Doncaster | Marshman | Karl Burke’s sprinter found like tough last backend in warm company, but he has been found a terrific opening here first time up and seems sure to be primed by his excellent connections (with the yard in red hot form/3w/11r in the last fortnight). |
3:15 | Newbury | Drumlee Spud | Ben Pauling remains in terrific form after a winning week at the Festival, and his talented mare is fancied to land this valuable Grade 2 prize. She remains open to loads more improvement after just three runs over hurdles (useful bumper form previously), and she looks on a very attractive opening handicap mark if proving more settled in the early stages of her races (with Beau Morgan taking off a very handy 5lb). |
3:35 | Doncaster | Awaal | Simon and Ed Crisford’s classy handicapper often attracted hefty market interest last season without delivering for punters, but he is definitely well capable of going close from this sort of mark and seems sure to be primed first time up for this prestigious prize. Harry Davies is booked for the ride, and he will be looking to weave his way through late and fast off what seems sure to be a very strong gallop. |
