Today’s Racing Tips – September 10th
A traditional ITV 7 on Saturday, with the cameras covering the final day of the Doncaster St Leger meeting (with the oldest classic run at 3.30pm over the stamina sapping 1m6f trip). This year’s renewal is likely to feature a very short priced favourite in New London, though he has had a series of pretty hard races through the summer months and the ground conditions are likely to be a good bit softer here.
Elsewhere, the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes from Leopardstown at 3.45pm is sure to be a high class affair even without the unbeaten Baaeed turning up, while the big betting race of the afternoon is likely to be the Portland handicap at 1.45pn.
Chaldean
Doncaster 2:20 (UK time)
Andrew Balding’s rapid improver really impressed when landing the Acomb Stakes at York last time out, and is expected to take this valuable Group 2 before heading to the Royal Lodge. He is a strong galloper who will relish the long Doncaster straight, and a positive ride from Frankie Dettori should make him extremely hard to pass (will stay a mile plus next season and has got loads of scope to progress further after just three career starts).
Odds: NA
Elder Eldarov
Doncaster 3:30 (UK time)
Roger Varian’s progressive 3-y-o lost his unbeaten record in a tactical and muddling small field at Longchamp last time out, rather tapped for pace dropped back to 1m4f in a race that developed into a dash to the line. He had created a deep impression previously when winning the Queens Vase at the Royal meeting despite a troubled run through, and remains open to loads of natural improvement after just four career starts for his excellent connections.
Odds: NA

Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:45 | Doncaster | Chipstead | Roger Teal’s sprinter returned to his very best form to land a hefty gamble at Sandown 21 days ago, up on a fast pace throughout and pulling out more up the hill. He has a raised mark to defy now, but has optimum conditions again at Doncaster on Saturday and can land this competitive handicap under Richard Kingscote. |
2:00 | Chester | Fancy Man | Richard Hannon’s useful performer has not been easy to place this summer, but he shaped well in defeat on a couple of occasions until struggling in a huge field York handicap last time out. He now switches to listed company at Chester on Saturday, but will relish the ground conditions and a smaller field should mean there are no hard luck stories in running under Pat Dobbs. |
2:20 | Doncaster | Chaldean | Andrew Balding’s rapid improver really impressed when landing the Acomb Stakes at York last time out, and is expected to take this valuable Group 2 before heading to the Royal Lodge. He is a strong galloper who will relish the long Doncaster straight, and a positive ride from Frankie Dettori should make him extremely hard to pass (will stay a mile plus next season and has got loads of scope to progress further after just three career starts). |
2:35 | Chester | Revich | Richard Spencer’s useful performer had been hinting his turn was near until struggling to make an impact in a huge field at York last time out, and this looks a much easier opening at Chester with conditions to suit. |
2:55 | Doncaster | Kinross | Ralph Beckett’s 5-y-o has proven a very reliable performer at Group 2/3 level over the last couple of years, and he comes into this on the back of an impressive success at York last month. A positive ride from Dettori is on the cards here, and his tenacious attitude for pressure is sure to prove a potent weapon up the long Doncaster straight. |
3:30 | Doncaster | Elder Eldarov | Roger Varian’s progressive 3-y-o lost his unbeaten record in a tactical and muddling small field at Longchamp last time out, rather tapped for pace dropped back to 1m4f in a race that developed into a dash to the line. He had created a deep inpression previously when winning the Queens Vase at the Royal meeting despite a troubled run through, and remains open to loads of natural improvement after just four career starts for his excellent connections. |
3:45 | Leopardstown | Vadeni | Jean Claude-Rouget’s top class performer showed a terrific turn of foot to come from last to first to land the Coral Eclipse at Sandown in July, and he has been kept fresh since to tackle this valuable and prestigious Group 1 prize. He has now won 5 of his 7 career starts, and any rain that falls on Saturday would be a huge positive to his chances. |
