Today’s Racing Tips – June 1st

Saturday’s ITV racing coverage focuses in on Epsom, with the Derby at 4.30pm very much the highlight on a very competitive and open card. The current favourite City of Troy has plenty to prove after an expensive flop in the 2000 Guineas on his seasonal reappearance, and bookmakers will be hoping for a big priced outsider to oblige for one of the big betting races of the year on the flat. Elsewhere there is a brilliant mix of Group 3 action and two really competitive five furlong handicaps for the punters to get stuck into, with this downhill track one of the fastest tests of speed in the country.

John and Sean Quinn have a cracking team assembled this season from their northern base, and this progressive sprinter made a very promising return to the fray at Chester last month (buried away up the inside and finishing strongly into a closing third). He remains with upside in these ultra competitive sprint handicaps after just five career starts on the turf, and can weave his way through late under the red hot Jason Hart (with several proper trailblazers likely to duel on the lead).

Epsom 4.30 (UK time)

Andrew Balding’s promising 3-y-o showed a terrific attitude over 1m2f in the Blue Riband Trail at this track last time out (sent off an unfancied 9/1 chance after 7 months off the track), and should relish this stiffer test of stamina over 1m4f in a strongly run race. He remains open to plenty of improvement after just five career starts so far, and plenty from the yard have been needing a run to put them straight this season. He represents much better value at around 20/1 under the excellent Oisin Murphy, with plenty at the head of the market having questions to answer.

2:00	Epsom	ASTRAL BEAU	Pam Sly’s classy mare shaped well on her seasonal reappearance at Doncaster in March on soft ground, and had excuses last time out at Newmarket in a muddling small field. This extended mile should be ideal under regular rider Shane Kelly, and she might just be a bigger price than the pick of her form entitles her to be (with some of the bigger yards represented at the top of the market).
2:35	Epsom	REGAL REALITY	Sir Michael Stoute’s veteran 9-y-o went into the notebook when a never dangerous third in the Huxley at Chester last time out (very slowly away under Saffie Osborne and never landed a blow behind the smart Passenger), and this stiff test at a mile promises to suit ideally under the excellent Ryan Moore. He has not been easy to place in recent times, with his mark far too high for handicaps, but this Group 3 looks a terrific bit of placing by his astute connections.

3:45	Epsom	CLARENDON HOUSE	Robert Cowell’s pacey sprinter returned to his very best form at York last month, ridden with more patience than usual and readily asserting late under a confident ride on the decent ground. This fastest of five furlong tracks has suited him perfectly in the past, and he can weave his way through late under Tom Marquand (and defy the handicapper from a slightly raised mark).
