Today’s Racing Tips – May 25th

Saturday’s ITV action covers the best of the flat action from The Curragh, Goodwood, Haydock and York, with ten races on the channel on one of the busiest weekends of the whole turf season. There is a brilliant mix of tough heritage handicaps for punters to get stuck into, alongside Group 1 quality as the Irish 2000 Guineas has attracted a fascinating field from the top yards. Easing ground now looks likely across the country after an unsettled few days of weather, and this will not help the form settle down after plenty of shock results in the opening weeks of the turf season.

Today’s Daily Nap

ROGUE LIGHTNING

Haydock 1.50 (UK time)

Tom Clover’s stable star has own 4 of his 8 career starts so far on the turf, and looks a sprinter to follow over the summer months ahead. He is a strong traveller with a smart turn of foot when the cards fall right, and this flat track with a bit of cut in the ground would be his optimum conditions under the excellent James Doyle.

Odds: 5.00

Today’s Value Angle

STERLING KNIGHT

Haydock 3.00 (UK time)

Ed Dunlop has his horses in rude health at the moment with 4 winners in the last fortnight at a 17pc strike rate, and his useful handicapper should relish the expected easing of the ground at Haydock on Saturday (under the promising 5lb claimer Morgan Cole for just the second time). He ran a blinder in the mud on his seasonal reappearance at Doncaster in April, and probably found the run coming too soon when disappointing on faster ground at Newmarket last time out.

Odds: 13.00

TrackHorseAnalysis
HaydockSIR LESS PATTERSONHarry Eustace has made a terrific start to his training career, and this improving 3-y-o is fancied to make a winning switch to the turf at Haydock on Saturday. He comes into this after landing hefty market confidence at Kempton in April, doing well to assert having pulled hard in the early stages, and the first time booking of Oisin Murphy certainly increases confidence that he can make a winning handicap debut in this sphere.
GoodwoodQIRATRalph Beckett’s 3-y-o ran to a useful level in three runs as a juvenile last season, and starts off this term from an attractive opening handicap mark. He handled the mud well when finishing second at Salisbury in October having been hammered down to odds-on favouritism, and will not be inconvenienced if conditions do ease at Goodwood on Saturday.
HaydockROGUE LIGHTNINGTom Clover’s stable star has own 4 of his 8 career starts so far on the turf, and looks a sprinter to follow over the summer months ahead. He is a strong traveller with a smart turn of foot when the cards fall right, and this flat track with a bit of cut in the ground would be his optimum conditions under the excellent James Doyle.
GoodwoodBEELEYThe Gosden’s 3-y-o looked a very smart filly when making a promising seasonal debut at Sandown in April, shaping well having run around when first coming under pressure on just her second career start (can be excused latest run at Chester). This represents a sharp jump up in class from maiden company, but she is bound to improve dramatically with more racing experience, and can take this listed prize under Rab Havlin before tackling hotter company in the summer ahead over middle distances.
HaydockVANDEEKSimon and Ed Crisford have made a rather slow start to the turf season, but their classy 3-y-o seems sure to be primed to make a winning reappearance in this valuable Group 2 prize. He raced unbeaten through an impressive juvenile campaign, and has already proved himself on very testing ground if the forecast rain does arrive.
YorkSTARLUSTRalph Beckett’s sprinter comes into this contest in sharpened up by a promising effort at Ascot earlier in the month, and he has plenty of form previously on an eased surface to suggest he will go close here (including at this course over six furlongs last season when a very eye-catching second after a slow break/rough trip).
HaydockSTERLING KNIGHTEd Dunlop has his horses in rude health at the moment with 4 winners in the last fortnight at a 17pc strike rate, and his useful handicapper should relish the expected easing of the ground at Haydock on Saturday (under the promising 5lb claimer Morgan Cole for just the second time). He ran a blinder in the mud on his seasonal reappearance at Doncaster in April, and probably found the run coming too soon when disappointing on faster ground at Newmarket last time out.
YorkERMESINDEKevin Phillippart de Foy is very much a young trainer to keep on side of, and his unexposed handicapper looks sure to relish the better ground expected at York on Saturday (got very tired on heavy ground at Longchamp on her seasonal reappearance in April).
HaydockDIVINE COMEDYHarry Eustace’s stayer shaped nicely on his seasonal reappearance last month, and is entitled to sharpen up fitness-wise with that run under his belt. He was won 4 of his 13 career starts on the turf, and a patient ride is on the cards from regular 5lb claiming rider Kaiya Fraser.
CurraghRIVER TIBERAidan O’Brien has a typically strong hand with his 3-y-o’s and this strapping colt has always looked the type to relish a step up to a mile this season. He won 3 of his 5 starts as a juvenile, including when landing a hefty punt in the Coventry at Royal Ascot, and seems sure to be fully tuned up for this valuable prize after 238 days on the sidelines.
