Some cracking jumping action for ITV racing viewers on Saturday, with the best of the meetings at Sandown and Wincanton covered live. The listed mares hurdle at 2.25pm is sure to be a thorough test of stamina on the deep ground, with all of the top UK NH yards likely to be represented, while there are also some ultra competitive handicaps to try and solve at both venues.
In this article:

The Churchill Lad
Sandown 3:37 (UK time)
Rebecca Menzies has enjoyed a terrific few weeks, and her useful handicapper has optimum ground conditions here to win his fourth race over hurdles. He impressed on deep ground when readily landing a competitive Haydock handicap from the front last time, and deserves extra credit as he jumped right at every flight throughout. This right-handed track should be more suitable under Ross Chapman, and he can defy a career high mark getting weight almost round from some suspect rivals.
Odds: NA
Daany
Wincanton 2:05 (UK time)
Joe Tickle’s runners have tended to need a run or two so far this winter, and his handicapper should now be spot on fitness-wise after a few promising efforts in defeat. He shaped better than the bare result last time out at Exeter, finishing tired over a trip (2m2f) he simply did not stay, and could be a different proposition here under the excellent Ben Jones (from what now looks a lenient looking mark on the pick of his best form in 10 runs over timber).
Odds: NA

| Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:50 | Sandown | Gustavian | Anthony Honeyball has maintained a remarkable strike rate over the last few months as the ground rides deep, and this frustrating handicapper can build on the promise of his second behind the prolific Richmond Lake at Aintree last time out. He can make the odd jumping error, but goes well in the mud and should now be at peak fitness after two runs this winter. |
| 2:05 | Wincanton | Daany | Joe Tickle’s runners have tended to need a run or two so far this winter, and his handicapper should now be spot on fitness-wise after a few promising efforts in defeat. He shaped better than the bare result last time out at Exeter, finishing tired over a trip (2m2f) he simply did not stay, and could be a different proposition here under the excellent Ben Jones (from what now looks a lenient looking mark on the pick of his best form in 10 runs over timber). |
| 2:25 | Sandown | Nurse Susan | Dan Skelton’s classy mare has always been held in the highest regard at home, and she stripped a good deal fitter for a disappointing reappearance when winning a competitive Cheltenham handicap last month. This valuable listed prize demands more, but she will relish a thorough test of stamina up the hill in the mud, and her attitude under pressure should be a big asset under regular partner Harry Skelton. |
| 2:40 | Wincanton | Georges Saint | Venetia Williams has maintained a remarkable strike rate over the last few months as the ground rides deep, and this progressive handicapper can defy a career high mark at Wincanton on Saturday. He has impressed in winning lesser races at Ffos Las and Fakenham from the front of late, showing a tenacious attitude in very deep ground, and the testing conditions expected here should be ideal. |
| 3:00 | Sandown | Ramses De Teillee | David Pipe’s veteran 12-y-o has won 5 of his 25 starts over fences, with all of his best form coming when the ground rides soft or heavy. He seems sure to be primed for this return after 271 days off the track, and the booking of the excellent Jack Tudor certainly increases confidence that he can roll back the years. |
| 3:15 | Wincanton | Intimate | Venetia William’s progressive 6-y-o remains with upside oner hurdles after just three runs in fair maiden/novice company, and comes here on the back of a cracking effort behind Itsnoteasy at Uttoxeter last time out. He will relish this stiffer test of stamina stepping up in trip to an extended 2m5f for the first time, and looks on a very attractive opening mark for handicaps. |
| 3:37 | Sandown | The Churchill Lad | Rebecca Menzies has enjoyed a terrific few weeks, and her useful handicapper has optimum ground conditions here to win his fourth race over hurdles. |
