Today’s Racing Tips – August 20th

The final day of the York Ebor meeting dominates the ITV racing coverage on Saturday, with the big betting race certain to be the Sky Bet Ebor handicap at 3.35pm. This 1m6f contest has fantastic prize money on offer and always attracts a big field of up and coming stayers, with the market often a very accurate guide and some monster gambles landed over the years.

Sir Mark Prescott often lines up a progressive performer, although the 2022 renewal has a very wide open look to it at this stage with the bookmakers offering “6/1 the field”. There is also Group race action, with the City of York Stakes at 3.00pm looking a fascinating contest over the specialist seven furlong trip.

Sandown also provides two races, with classy Group 3 action at 2.05pm and 2.40pm, and the recent rain in the area most welcome after a few months of near drought at the Esher venue.

Dave Evans’ useful performer, has not had the cards fall right since winning the Wokingham at Royal Ascot (form that has worked out superbly subsequently), and he is worth another chance to confirm himself well capable of winning in Group company. He did too much too soon mid-race in the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury, and then found himself parked in a poor position out wide when finishing strongly into fourth at Deauville last time out.

Saturday’s Value Angle

Ed Dunlop’s frustrating handicapper was a huge eye-catcher over this course and distance in June, finishing like a train from miles off the pace to take a closing second, and has simply lacked the pace to get involved in two defeats since. A strong pace is assured in a big field for the Ebor, and his proven stamina should count for plenty as the leaders tire late up the long York straight.

1:50	YORK	MIGHTY ULYSSESS	.John and Thady Gosden’s progressive performer impressed when winning a valuable listed contest at Newmarket in July, and looks to have ideal conditions to follow up at York on Saturday.
2:05	SANDOWN	FONTEYN	Kevin Ryan’s smart 3-y-o shaped a lot better than the bare result behind Nashwa in Group 1 company at Goodwood 23 days ago (squeezed out the start and soon poorly positioned behind the top class winner), and should relish these calmer waters (and stiff uphill finish) at Sandown.
2:25	YORK	SHEER ROCKS	Eve Johnson Houghton has enjoyed a terrific summer, and this consistent 3-y-o has long shaped as though worth a try over this stamina sapping 1m6f trip. He finished with running left in the tank in the Shergar Cup at Ascot 14 days ago, and this long flat straight at York should play to his strengths.
2:40	SANDOWN	LADY BULLET	Alice Haynes has made a real impact with just a handful of horses this summer, and her useful juvenile posted a really smart effort in defeat in the Albany at Royal Ascot last time out. This Group 3 represents a marked drop in class, and the quick ground expected at Sandown on Saturday should be ideal under Kieran O’Neill.

4:10	YORK	REGIONAL	Ed Bethell’s consistent 4-y-o was a big eye-catcher in the red hot Stewards Cup last time out, missing the break but charging home into third of 28 over this six furlong trip. He will always need luck in running given his run style in these cavalry charges, but has the right man up in Kevin Stott and seems sure to go close here if enjoying any luck in running late.
