A very busy day of racing in Britain and Ireland on Friday, with the second day of the July meeting at Newmarket very much the highlight. A huge crowd is expected at HQ, with the best race undoubtedly the Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at 3.35pm. This provides a great opportunity for top class fillies and mares to win some excellent prize money, and the field looks especially strong at the declarations stage. Flat fans are in for a very rewarding day, with supporting cards at Ascot, Chester, Chepstow and York, while followers of jump racing have a hugely competitive evening card at Kilbeggan to get stuck into (with the Midlands National handicap at 7.50pm particularly well supported).

Saeed bin Suroor’s filly created a deep impression when winning at Newmarket on her debut, and did little wrong at Royal Ascot in the Albany when sent off a very heavily backed 2/1f. She bumped into a very smart one there in Aidan O’Brien’s Meditate, and deserves extra credit in closing down the positively ridden winner racing mainly all alone in the centre of the track. There is still scope for plenty more improvement after just three career starts, and the prevailing fast ground conditions clearly suit ideally under the up-and-coming Ray Dawson.

Brian Meehan’s classy performer disappointed when well backed at York last time out, compromising his finishing effort by refusing to settle in the early stages of that muddling small field listed contest. He had previously shaped well on his seasonal debut at Ascot behind Al Aaasy, and a big field handicap over this 1m6f trip could be just what he needs to drop the bridle in the early stages under Sean Levey. There should still be improvement in the tank after just six career starts, and encouragingly he ran extremely well here last July in the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy (beaten only by the smart Yibir and looking like a stiffer test of stamina would suit).
