Thursday is dominated by the third day of Royal Ascot, with ground conditions likely to be quickening up all the time after a dry week so far. Gold Cup Day begins with a competitive 2-y-o contest in the Norfolk Stakes, providing an opportunity for those juveniles who may be just below the top class level required in the Coventry Stakes.
This is a very competitive card for punters to try and solve, with huge fields likely in the handicaps and the Group contests featuring runners with different formlines from Britain and Ireland.
The highlight of the day is undoubtedly the Ascot Gold Cup at 4.20pm, with Stradivarius bidding to make history in 2022 by winning an incredible fourth renewal of this historic prize under Frankie Dettori (after disappointing in the 2021 renewal when sent off a well backed 5/6f). He looked as good as ever when winning at York on his seasonal reappearance, and a win for this very popular stayer would raise the roof.

William Haggas has his team in blistering form at the right time, with 9 winners in the last 14 days at a 22pc strike rate, and his exciting filly is fancied to land the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot on Thursday. She has been brought along with typical patience by her excellent trainer, improving dramatically on a sighter as a juvenile to win in some style twice this season.
Decent ground clearly suited when she sluiced upon in a warm Nottingham maiden in May, and a step up this trip on testing ground proved no problem in the Height of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood 27 days ago. There is loads more natural improvement in the tank as she gathers more racing experience, and she can swoop late here under Tom Marquand.
Odds: 3.25

Andrew Balding’s progressive colt finally shed his maiden tag at the fifth attempt when making all at Bath 27 days ago, and is fancied to improve further for a step up to 1m4f now going handicapping for the first time. He is a scopey strong galloping type with a good attitude, and is likely to find this track a lot more suitable than Epsom and Bath where he has been running so far this season.
An opening mark of 92 might underestimate his ability now getting a test over middle distances, and hopefully David Probert will be positive from the stalls to get a good early position in this huge field of unexposed 3-y-o’s.
Odds: 26.00
