The bookmakers have agreed that Sean Strickland is a small favourite to win this one, with an implied probability of around 55.6%, depending on which bookie you use. We definitely see the reasoning behind this and it’s certainly no fluke that Strickland is the UFC Middleweight champion. He has been tested time and time again versus much ‘better’ opponents and has come out on top.
His journey hasn’t been perfect and he definitely isn’t unbeatable, but he has a way of using simple techniques and pressure to his advantage. He isn’t fancy and he doesn’t knock people out left and right. But his pressure, timing, and composure make for a very difficult fighter to read.
However, Dricus Du Plessis is by far the scariest opponent in the division for Strickland right now with Pereira out of the division and Adesanya on break from fighting. Since getting his nose fixed, Du Plessis has been tearing through his competition, and we have seen exactly what kind of performance he can turn in in his most recent fight. If anyone has the power striking to knock out Strickland right now, it is Dricus Du Plessis.
There is definitely still some solid value on him right now at 2.00 odds.
Nobody thought that Sean Strickland would be wearing the UFC Middleweight belt around his waist after suffering that left hook KO loss to Alex Pereira in July 2022, and then a decision loss to Jared Cannonier in December. But Strickland came back in 2023 with a vengeance, taking a short-notice fight against Nassourdine Imavov and winning convincingly, followed by a TKO win against a rising star in Abusupiyan Magomedov.
And just like that, Strickland earned himself a title fight against Israel Adesanya. He went on to beat Adesanya in his own game, outlanding the former champ by 137-94 in significant strikes and securing the division title. Strickland is now on a 3-fight winning streak with a 28-5 MMA record.
Dricus Du Plessis has been waiting for a title fight and his most recent win against Robert Whittaker. The 29-year-old South African is on an 8-fight winning streak and his last 3 wins have been impressive, to say the least.
Darren Till, Derek Brunson and Robert Whittaker have been his last 3 opponents and Du Plessis found a way to finish each fight inside 3 rounds. A submission against Till, a TKO (corner stoppage) vs Brunson and an amazing TKO vs Whittaker were enough to get Du Plessis to 2nd place in the Middleweight rankings and a shot at UFC gold.
UFC 297 will be live on TNT Sports and Discovery+, or you can order UFC Fight Pass.
