Thanks to the latest shuffle of opponents, we got Machado Garry vs Prates as the main event for the newest Fight Night card. And what a fight this is! Prates was supposed to fight Geoff Neal at UFC 314. But after that fight fell apart due to injury, he was matched up with the brash Irishman who decided to step in on short notice and take on Prates. Taking this fight is a massive risk for Garry, especially after his first career loss against Shavkat Rakhmonov in December. As for Prates, it is a chance for him to go up the ladder and perhaps challenge for the Welterweight title if he can put Garry away in a spectacular fashion.

Ian Machado Garry Record (15-1)

Machado Garry was a star in the making until his loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov. He was undefeated, had three stoppage wins in eight fights in the UFC, and knew how to talk the talk. Many, perhaps a bit prematurely, decided to compare him to his countryman, Connor McGregor.

Unfortunately, Machado Garry wasn’t able to put his fist where his mouth was in the interim title fight against Rakhmonov. He lost to a decision and was greatly outclassed by Shavkat, who was the superior fighter that evening. Garry now wants to get his career back on track as fast as possible. But rushing into another high-profile fight so soon might not be as good an idea as he thinks.

Before the Shavkat loss, Ian was on a 15-fight win streak, defeating his last three opponents via decision. Even though he is a flashy talker, he is still not a proven finisher, as his last stoppage win happened in May 2023 against Daniel Rodriguez.

Carlos Prates (21-6)

Prates is one of the most exciting new fighters in the Welterweight division, and perhaps the entire UFC as well. Training with the Fighting Nerds, the hottest new team in the business, Prates was able to show just exactl what he is worth. Four fights in the UFC with four knockout wins.

Dubbed the Nightmare, he is on an 11-fight win streak and has entered the UFC after a win in Dana White’s Contender Series by, you guessed it, KOing Mitch Ramirez. After that, it was spectacle after spectacle for Prates.

He entered the UFC with a win over Trevin Giles and was also able to stop Jingliang Li and Neil Magny. He has enormous power in his hands and has the potential to challenge for the title. But first, he has to go through his most dangerous opponent yet in Machado Garry.

Ian Machado Garry vs Carlos Prates Prediction

The fight between Garry and Prates should be nothing less than a spectacle. Both guys are tough and like to stand and bang. While the two are very adept on the ground, I don’t see the fight going there, not even for a second. So, this fight should be viewed as a complete stand-up affair between the two.

As such, Prates has the advantage and power on his side. He has the more heavy hands has the ability to put the lights out on his opponents and can even put him on the cage if needs be.

Machado Garry is an all-around fighter, but he is not a finisher. He has the ability to outpunch his opponents and outwork them. But can he really handle Prates’ power? My thoughts are that he won’t. Once he gets inside and actually feels the power that Prates possesse, it is going to be a whole different ball game for him.

Even though another knockout win for Prates sounds tempting, I would say that he rather gets his first decision win in the octagon, defeating Garry on points.
