West Ham make the short trip across the capital to take on Crystal Palace. This London Derby sees two sides on contrasting form. The Hammers are on a far better run of form than their city neighbours. David Moyes’ men are just a point away from the top four of the Premier League and a win here could take them into it.Read more
Crystal Palace are on a poor run. Roy Hodgson’s men lost 4-0 to Manchester City in their last Premier League outing which was the low point of a poor few weeks. They’ve won just one of their last nine league matches. The Hammers are doing much better. West Ham have lost just one of their last eight league fixtures and have won three in a row.
These sides last met just a month ago. The score was 1-1 at the London Stadium as Crystal Palace continued their good record against the Hammers. The Eagles have lost just one of their last six matches against West Ham and won both of the fixtures last season. West Ham haven’t won at Selhurst Park since 2016.
Crystal Palace are struggling right now and it’s easy to see what the problem is. The Eagles just aren’t scoring enough goals in the Premier League with just three in their last seven fixtures. Two of those goals came against bottom side, Sheffield United. They haven’t scored in any of their last three league games and their star players just aren’t performing like they were earlier in the season. Wilfried Zaha has scored or assisted just one goal in his last eight league games for Palace. He had 10 goal involvements in nine appearances before then.
West Ham are having no such problems. Their excellent season continued in midweek as they secured their third straight Premier League win and their fourth in all competitions. They’re scoring goals freely and are five points off the table. When manager David Moyes took over the club just 13 months ago, they were just a point above the relegation zone.
A big part of the reason why they’ve achieved this has been their defensive shape. West Ham have one of the best defences in the Premier League this season. Only a handful of teams have conceded fewer goals than them but many of them came against the best sides in the league. West Ham have conceded more than a single goal in six of their 19 Premier League fixtures. Four of those games were against Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal. When it comes to the mid and lower-table Premier League sides, the Hammers keep things tight at the back.
It’s part of the reason why they’re the favourites here. The hosts, Crystal Palace are out at 11/5 to secure just their second Premier League win since the middle of December. A draw is 5/2 but West Ham are the favourites to get the win. David Moyes’ men are 6/4 to secure the three points and to continue their excellent run of form in the Premier League.
West Ham usually score at least once in the league. They’ve failed to score in just 16% of their Premier League games this season. Only Aston Villa and Manchester City have failed to score in a lower percentage of their matches. Contrastingly, the Eagles have failed to score in five of their last seven Premier League matches. The Hammers are 16/5 to win to nil which seems like a good bet.
So this may not be the highest-scoring match of the weekend. Palace have had an average of 1.8 total match goals in their last five Premier League fixtures and that includes last week’s 4-0 defeat to Manchester City. West Ham’s tally is even lower with just 1.25 total match goals in their last four games. It’s 4/5 for there to be under 2.5 total match goals here and 12/5 for under 1.5.
The Hammers are missing a goalscorer from their squad. They’ve had to rely on other sources for goals in recent weeks. Michail Antonio is on a good run of form and is the favourite at 7/4 to score anytime or a tempting 5/1 to score first. Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrahma are tempting options to score any time at 3/1 and 7/2 respectively.
