Islam Makhachev truly embodies the warrior Dagestanee spirit. He is one of the most dominant champions in the division. With a 13-1 UFC record (24-1 MMA record), this will only be his second title defence fight after winning it from Charles Oliveira. Both are coming against Alexander Volkanovksi. Volk was really close in their previous fight after losing, thanks to a unanimous decision around a year ago at UFC 284.
Alex Volkanovski has proved time and time again that he is perhaps the greatest Featherweight that has ever lived. He has never lost a Featherweight fight in his 13 UFC outings. With five title defences, where he defeated Max Holloway twice and had wars with Biran Ortega and Yari Rodriguez, Volk has nothing left to prove in this division.
That is why a move up to Lightweight makes sense, as he seeks to conquer one of the most talented divisions in the organisation. The only fight that Volkanovksi ever lost in the UFC was against Islam during their first fight. But he was not dominated as most are when facing Makhachev. This is why most UFC picks still give him a chance to win here.
Islam was originally meant to defend his Lightweight strap against Charles Oliveira. However, a late injury deterred him from appearing, which opened up the doors for Makhachev vs Volkanovksi II. While the original fight was a banger, the one we have before us may be even better.
Volkanovski has the ability to adapt and get better with every new fight. He has most than likely learned a lot from their first bout. Where he may have been defeated but not destroyed. In fact, he put up a lot of resistance to Islam’s ground game. If he can pressure Islam enough and establish his faints and striking game, Makhachev could be in for a surprise.
Makhachev enters the rematch against Volkanovksi as a firm favourite at 1.40 odds. But if you think that Alex has a chance to dethrone the champion, the odds stand at 3.33. But it is not as simple as that to make your Islam Makhachev vs Alex Volkanovski prediction.
Islam to win on points comes at 3.00 while betting on the fight to go the distance comes at 2.08. For a miracle to happen, something that most UFC picks forget about is Volkanovksi winning by KO/TKO, coming at 6.50 odds.
