The rematch between Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas goes down on the main card of UFC 251 on July 12th. Will Namajunas get her redemption?
Despite finding success in the early rounds of the first fight, Namajunas found herself on the receiving end of a devastating slam KO. Namajunas hasn’t fought since her loss to the Brazilian last May and is looking to get back in the game with a win.
In the first fight, Rose won the exchanges on the feet and outstruck the Brazilian in both rounds, until succumbing to defeat. Despite getting two takedowns, Andrade had trouble finding her range against Namajunas.
Andrade last fought in August of last year where she lost her title to Weili Zhang within the first minute of the first round. There’s no doubt both fighters are looking for a W.
In the words of UFC commentator Joe Rogan, Andrade is like a “little Wanderlei Silva”, which is quite an accurate description of her fighting style. She’s always pressing forward and looking to get the finish, anyway she can. She knocked out Karolina Kowalkiewicz in devastating fashion and produced a slam-KO of Namajunas in their first bout. Her aggressive fighting style has cost her fights however, as she isn’t the most technical-minded fighter and often leaves herself open to counters when she rushes forward. Because of the fact that she’s willing to take one to give one, she’s also taken some damage over the years, and her chin perhaps isn’t what it used to be. Nevertheless, this gal is always entertaining to watch!
Namajunas looked great in the first two rounds against Andrade and that is what we’re focusing on in this prediction. Andrade is smaller and less technical than Rose. However, the victor of the first bout is often also the one that wins the rematch. With this in mind, Andrade holds great value, as the betting underdog. Namajunas might be more technical, but Andrade has the power and perhaps mental advantage. Namajunas considered retirement after losing the first fight, which is not a great sign of mental toughness. She also was extremely affected by the infamous McGregor bus accident and has been straight forward about being very emotionally affected. Whether or not this is even an important factor to take into consideration, we’ll have to wait and see, but we believe that mentality is a big part of why rematches often are won by the same person who won the first.
Prediction: Jessica Andrade def. Rose Namajunas.
