Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets Moneyline Best Bet: Wednesday, August 17th

The New York Mets meet the Atlanta Braves for the third of their four-game series on Wednesday night. Atlanta has won the first two contests in the series by an aggregate of 18-1, but the home team are underdogs for Wednesday’s game with Max Scherzer getting the ball for the Mets. The Braves are just 3.5 games back in the National League East, and are on a 49-19 run, including eight consecutive wins.

Trade deadline acquisition Jake Odorizzi is on the mound for the defending champions. The former Twin has hovered around league average all year long. That trend has continued into his Braves tenure, with four earned runs allowed over 8.2 innings in his two starts. Odorizzi owns an xERA just above four, and faces a Mets offence which ranks sixth in the Majors by wRC+ since the start of July.

Of course, Atlanta’s line up has been just as potent, producing at an almost identical level over that period. The Braves have lit New York up in this series to date, but they are not going to be doing the same amount of damage against Scherzer and his sub-two ERA. The veteran right hander has been completely dominant since returning from the injured list. In that span, he has faced Atlanta twice, allowing just one earned run in 14.1 frames and striking out 22.

Scherzer has pitched at least six innings in every start since his return. Odorizzi clearly has a shorter leash, which will expose the Braves’ bullpen.

That has to be a concern – Atlanta is 24th in xFIP from its relief corps since the beginning of July, and 28th since the trade deadline. The results have been decent, but this isn’t exactly a shutdown bullpen.
New York, meanwhile, will have no such concerns. Scherzer is going to get deep into this game, meaning they might only need to use one other arm before handing over to the best reliever in baseball in Edwin Diaz.

Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets Best Bet

The Braves have been scorching hot for a prolonged period, and have outplayed the Mets to start this series. They are a whopping 39-22 at home.

Still, Scherzer’s presence outweighs all else. The Mets have the offence to get to Odorizzi and Atlanta’s middle relief, while the former Cy Young winner is going to keep the Braves quiet into the late innings.
It’s not often you can get this kind of price when Scherzer is on the mound. We couldn’t turn down the chance to back the Mets at 1.67.
