Atlanta Braves vs Philadelphia Phillies Moneyline Best Bet: Wheeler Dominates Atlanta
Atlanta Braves vs Philadelphia Phillies Moneyline Best Bet: Wednesday, August 3rd
Playing a rare, two-game series in Georgia, the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to bounce back from a heavy Tuesday defeat when they face the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday evening. Atlanta has built a seven-game advantage in the loss column over their National League East rivals, but Philadelphia was aggressive at the deadline in an effort to push on the second half of the season.

With Bryce Harper and Jean Segura still on the shelf, Philadelphia has needed Nick Castellanos to get back to his best at the plate and he’s certainly improved over the last month. The Phils’ chances are mostly dependent on the top of the rotation at the moment, however, and former Met Zack Wheeler takes the ball on Wednesday.
Wheeler is one of the best starters in the sport, and posted an ERA under 2.50 in July. His season numbers aren’t much worse, including a 2.99 xERA and a couple of solid outings against these Braves earlier in the year.
Atlanta has Charlie Morton on the hill. Morton seems to have aged in 2022, pitching to an ERA in the fours and an expected number which isn’t much better. There has been slight improvement over the last few weeks, but the veteran is giving up considerably more hard contact than he has in recent seasons.
The Phils got to Morton in a big way back in May, and they had a productive time against him when they matched up last week. Philadelphia’s offence is only at 106 wRC+ since the start of June, but they are well-suited to taking down Morton – this line up ranks in the top 12 in production against both fastballs and curveballs, which makes up 81% of Morton’s pitches.
Once the starters are out of the game, attention will turn to two bullpens which received reinforcements at the trade deadline. It’s unclear as yet if David Robertson and Raisel Iglesias will be available for Wednesday’s contest, however.
While the Phillies have a slight edge in bullpen performance over the season, there is considerable volatility in their relief corps, which was evident in Tuesday’s blowout.
Atlanta Braves vs Philadelphia Phillies Best Bet
Ultimately, this is relatively even game with the Phillies having a slight edge thanks to Wheeler’s performances in 2022. The books don’t seem to see it that way, though, with Atlanta being comfortably favoured.
Philadelphia has been good on the road, owning a 29-23 record. Sure, Atlanta is formidable at home with a 37-21 record, but that’s not enough to put us off backing the Phillies for the second game of this series.
We’re confident wagering on the road team to take this one on the back of another deep outing from Wheeler. He should help them avoid the lottery of using several relievers.
