Winners 9-6 in the opening game of this series on Monday night, the Miami Marlins are comfortably favoured over the Kansas City Royals for the second contest on Tuesday. Zack Greinke matches up with Jesus Luzardo, with the Marlins aiming to close the gap to the Atlanta Braves at the top of the National League East.
Kansas City is fifth in the American League Central. The 2023 campaign is another lost one. Only the historically uncompetitive Oakland Athletics have lost more games than the Royals, who have covered the run line in just 35% of their games this season. Miami, in stark contrast, has an MLB-best 10-3 record on the run line in 13 inter-league contests this season.

Miami has gone 8-4 in Luzardo’s starts this season. He has given up exactly one run in three of his previous four appearances. His 3.85 xERA isn’t going to get people too excited, but he has exhibited excellent control of late paired with some strong strikeout totals. The Royals have just a 99 wRC+ on the season against lefties.
While Greinke possesses immense pitching know-how and enjoyed a very solid May, the Royals have lost his last four starts. Part of that is down to their subpar offence, but it’s worth noting that the bullpen has let him down repeatedly.
Kansas City has one of the worst relief ERAs in the Majors since the start of last month, while the Marlins bullpen has been elite. Greinke has taken the loss just once over his previous four appearances, but the pitchers following him have been unable to convert decent starts into wins.
The veteran has pitched six innings just once this season, too, which leaves a lot of work for the relief corps to do.

Luzardo is a better pitcher than the 2023 version of Greinke. Miami’s offence is getting the job done at the moment, led by the extreme contact skills of Luis Arraez.
The bullpen matchup is not even remotely close. Miami’s relievers have amassed the second-most fWAR since the start of May, and should be able to convert a good Luzardo start into a fifth consecutive win. We like their chances of doing so by a couple of runs at least. Eight of their last nine wins have covered this line.
These Royals haven’t done well at bouncing back after losses, covering in a league-worst 36.6% of games when they have lost their previous outing. They have their work cut out against Luzardo, who has generally been very impressive over the last few weeks.
