Washington Nationals vs Miami Marlins Preview

Sandy Alcantara is having a disappointing season thus far, but the Marlins are still favoured away to the lowly Washington Nationals on Friday. Alcantara pitched seven strong innings in his last start. He’s facing a Nationals offence which ranks 22nd in wRC+ this season.

Trevor Williams, owner of an xERA north of five, gets the ball for the Nats. Washington has a surprisingly strong record of 7-6 in his starts, yet his underlying metrics are not great and he doesn’t miss many bats.

Once the starters leave the game, it’s clearly advantage Miami. The Marlins are eighth in bullpen ERA since the start of last month. Washington is 29th. The Marlins should be able to cover this line.

Houston Astros vs Cincinnati Reds Preview

Andrew Abbott is the 94th-ranked prospect in all of baseball, and hasn’t allowed a run in his first two Major League starts. Abbott has ridden some batted-ball luck thus far, and only struck out 10 in 11.2 innings, but his strikeout line still seems low.

The Astros are a low-strikeout team in general. They have suffered 9.66 Ks per game over the last six, though, and have seen a bit of an uptick in their strikeout rate so far this month.

There’s no question Abbott has strikeout stuff. He had 12.9 strikeouts per nine in the minor leagues, including an outrageous 15 per nine in 10 minors starts in 2023. While Cincinnati likely won’t push him too deep into the game, five Ks is still an easy enough mark for Abbott to reach.

Singer faces an Angels line up featuring MLB’s hottest hitter in Shohei Ohtani. The two-way phenom is on a 12-game hitting streak, including four home runs in four games.
