CHICAGO WHITE SOX VS SAN DIEGO PADRES
Sat, Sep 30. 00:40 (UK time)
The San Diego Padres have finally found their best form. With a scorching 17-7 record in September, it might have been too little too late for the Friars, but they are looking to finish the season on a high and have a great chance to do so against a White Sox team nearing 100 losses.
The ChiSox have gone 13-29 since 9th August. Dylan Cease gets the ball on Friday, coming off a stellar outing against the Red Sox, but like so many of his teammates, it has been a subpar year for Cease despite his swing-and-miss stuff.
Chicago is the worst offence in baseball this month. San Diego is third in wRC+, and has seen their bullpen close out a lot of games.
Nick Martinez and Cease is a closer starting matchup than reputations might suggest – this is a great price on the Padres to cover.
MILWAUKEE BREWERS VS CHICAGO CUBS
Sat, Sep 30. 01:10 (UK time)
Instead of a showdown for the division, the Brewers and Cubs wrap up the regular season with Chicago battling for a Wild Card spot after being swept by the Braves. Milwaukee has already secured another division title, and will look to reach the 90-win mark on Friday night.
Colin Rea hasn’t exactly been dominant this year, but Milwaukee’s starter has a 2.79 ERA in September and is backed up by an elite bullpen (second-best ERA this month). Chicago, meanwhile, gives the ball to Kyle Hendricks and played some very sloppy baseball in Atlanta with the defence and bullpen letting them down.
The Brewers deserve to be bigger favourites with how the Cubs have played of late. There’s value taking the home team.
COLORADO ROCKIES VS MINNESOTA TWINS
Sat, Sep 30. 01:10 (UK time)
Joe Ryan ranks in the 87th percentile in strikeout rate and the 88th percentile in chase rate. On Friday, he faces a strikeout-happy Rockies offence, which has the eighth-highest strikeout percentage in September.
Colorado is below average in pitches per plate appearance, which should help Ryan work relatively deep into this game. The Rockies also have the fifth-highest strike percentage and the second-worst contact rate. Only the White Sox swing at more pitches – Ryan’s ability to make hitters chase should work wonders here.
The Rockies have recorded nine or more strikeouts in eight of their last nine games. We only need Ryan to get to six here – he struck out 10 Angels in his last appearance and a similar outing is possible here.
