New York Yankees vs Seattle Mariners Moneyline Best Bet: Tuesday, August 2nd

Fresh off a 7-2 win on Monday, the New York Yankees host the Seattle Mariners for game two of their three-game series on Tuesday night. Games falling on trade deadline day can provide some odd line ups and weird moments, but New York have already made their major moves, landing Andrew Benintendi, Scott Effross, Lou Trivino and Frankie Montas. Benintendi should be on the line-up card against right hander Logan Gilbert.

Jameson Taillon gets the ball for the Yankees, coming off a difficult July where he owned an ERA of over five. Taillon, though, seemed to get back on track in his last outing with six shutout frames against the Kansas City Royals. His xwOBA is trending in the right direction, and he still boasts one of the lowest walk rates in the league to go with a solid 3.91 xERA.

Gilbert is having a curious season. The big righty has an ERA of under three, yet his xERA is comfortably over four, and he’s been allowing a bucket load of hard contact. Despite All-Star calibre outcomes, Gilbert is down in the fifth percentile in hard-hit rate, and hasn’t been dominant with any of his pitches.

He leans on his fastball, throwing it over 50% of the time, which is a problem against a Yankees offence that ranks second in production off fastballs. The hard-hit rate is alarming too, with New York sitting sixth in the frequency of loud contact.

Meanwhile, Taillon faces an offence with 12 runs scored in five games. There’s no Julio Rodriguez, Dylan Moore or Taylor Trammell. They are hovering around league average since the start of June.
Despite Gilbert having better traditional numbers, Taillon keeping the Mariners quiet is more likely than Gilbert shutting down this Yankees offence. The Mariners starter hasn’t been fooling hitters this year, and that’s a problem against the powerhouse Yankees.

New York Yankees vs Seattle Mariners Best Bet

The bullpen matchup is pretty even over the last couple of months with New York seventh in xFIP and Seattle landing in ninth. It’s unclear if Effross and Trivino will be available, but they potentially make Aaron Boone’s life easier if needing to navigate several innings after Taillon departs.

It’s not the spiciest take in the world to say the Yankees are considerably better than the Mariners. Some will fancy Seattle as an underdog pick with Gilbert on the mound, but the value lies with the home team on Tuesday night even though Taillon is coming off a challenging month.
