The Arizona Diamondbacks wrap up their three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. National League Cy Young contender Zac Gallen gets the ball for the Diamondbacks, going up against the Phillies’ Ranger Suarez. On the back of a strong start from Ryne Nelson, Arizona got the better of the Phils on Tuesday, putting them on a 9-2 run and firmly second in the NL West.
Philadelphia is looking to avoid the sweep. They have gone 7-13 since the penultimate day of last month. This is a team underachieving, an offence not living up to its reputation and a pitching staff blowing too many games. The feeling around both of these ballclubs couldn’t be much more different coming into this series finale.

The offences rank relatively similarly in their quality of contact. The way they are doing it is different, however. Just six teams strikeout more often than Philadelphia. Neither team walks all that much, but the Diamondbacks put the ball in play a tonne, and their young roster ranks as one of the best base running teams in the Majors, taking extra bases and stealing frequently. Their speed can put pressure on a Phillies defence which ranks in the bottom-five in the big leagues.
This starting pitching matchup comes down in Arizona’s favour, too. Gallen got roughed up in his last outing, but the Diamondbacks are 7-3 in his 2023 starts. He has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his previous eight appearances. Look for the right hander to work deep into this game against a line-up which ranks just below league average in pitches per plate appearance.
Suarez has only had two starts this year. His 10.50 ERA has been bloated considerably, with his contact allowed suggesting he should be below five. It is unlikely he goes deep into this game, putting a lot of responsibility on a Philadelphia bullpen which ranks around league average.
While the Diamondbacks haven’t been their best against lefties, their high-contact approach should have some success against Suarez.

Arizona is rightly favoured for this one. If anything, it’s surprising that their price to win is so long. Gallen is one of the sport’s premier pitchers. Sure, the Phillies are better at home than on the road, but that hasn’t helped them in the first two games of this series.
It is worthwhile partnering the Dbacks moneyline with Gallen to record five or more strikeouts to get our odds up to 2.15. We are relying on Gallen’s last start being no more than a blip, and when he’s good, striking out five or more is a given. He’s hit this number in eight of his 10 starts this term.
