The 4-3 Boston Celtics are 7.5-point favourites for their Friday night matchup with the 5-4 Chicago Bulls at TD Garden. Chicago won two of the three contests last season, and has opened the season 5-3-1 against the spread.
Lonzo Ball and Andre Drummond are out for the road team, while Coby White is questionable. Boston remains without Robert Williams III and Danilo Gallinari, but otherwise has a healthy roster at its disposal.

Just four teams are allowing higher opponent shot quality than the Bulls. Boston are the league leaders by that metric, living up to the defensive reputation they established in the second half of 2021-22. There is clearly a degree of fortune in Chicago being a top seven defence – they are allowing a lot of threes and rank just around average in opponent shots at the rim. Forcing turnovers is a strength, however, and this can be a weakness for the Celtics when the game slows down.
Boston has a near-perfect defensive profile, funnelling opposition into the mid-range. They are fouling more than they would like, and giving up mid-rangers isn’t as optimal against a Bulls team with DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine. From an individual perspective, though, Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum have been playing at an elite level on the defensive end. They are stacked with plus defenders.
Both of these teams rank in the top eight in shot quality on offence. Chicago’s win at United Center last month might put some off backing the Celtics, but it is unlikely the Bulls shoot it that well from the outside again.
Nikola Vucevic was a major factor in that win, racking up 23 rebounds. It was one of four double-doubles on the season for the former Magic big man, and he has reached double-figure boards in each of his last three. With the opportunity for some easy points from offensive rebounds, there’s value on Vucevic to clock a fifth double-double.

Guarding elite wings remains a problem for the Bulls. Forwards don’t get much better than Jayson Tatum right now. Tatum had 26 when these teams last met, and he’s averaging over 30 per game this season. The alternate lower points line of 20.5 seems all but guaranteed here – Tatum has gone over this in every game this season, and if Boston is going to win, it is likely he has a productive night.
At times in the shadow of his MVP candidate teammate, Jaylen Brown has also started this season in a superb run of form. Brown has had just one game with fewer than 21 points and scored 30 in the win over Cleveland last time out. Just like Tatum, Brown can benefit from Chicago’s limited wing defence. Again, let’s take the alternate points over.
