The 2021/22 Western Conference Finals begin with the Golden State Warriors welcoming the Dallas Mavericks to Chase Center tonight at 02:00 (UK time). Both sides faced serious competition in the semi-finals and proved they are serious contenders, but only one will reach the finals. I’ve got a 4-piece Bet Builder at 9.00 odds ready for tonight’s Game 1, so feel free to have a look at the article below for my picks & analysis.

The Golden State Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 6 by 110-96 and advanced to the Western Conference finals. The Warriors enjoyed a comfortable 3-1 lead after Game 4 but were unable to get the job done, losing Game 5 by a whopping 134-95, and it looked like Memphis would bounce back to even up the series. But Klay and Steph showed up in the final game, going for 30 and 29 points apiece and closing out the series at home.

The Warriors had the best defence in the league during the regular season with a rating of 106.9, and even though this number has increased to 110.2 in the playoffs, they are still a very versatile defensive side and have shown they can make adjustments on the fly when necessary. With Gary Payton II, Andre Igoudala and Wiseman out, they are far from complete, but Steve Kerr’s squad is more than capable of getting the job done on both sides of the floor.

The Dallas Mavericks are having their best season in recent team history, making the conference finals for the first time since the Nowitzki & co. 2011 championship year. Luka Doncic has been terrific for the Mavs this season, averaging 31.5 points per game in the playoffs and leading them past the top regular-season team in the west this year the Pheonix Suns. Spencer Dinwiddie and Jalen Brunson have also been crucial pieces in this team’s successful playoff push, but it mostly comes down to the game plan.

The Mavs are the 3rd slowest team in the entire tournament this year, and despite attempting 80.0 field goals per game, they’ve mostly been good looks, and they’ve made 38.5% of their threes. The Mavs also play tough defence, allowing just 101.9 points per game in the playoffs, and keeping opponents to just 33.9% from beyond the arc. That said, their NET rating drops down from 12.7 at home to -3.4 in road games. Ouch!

Bet Builder is available at odds of 9.00

Odds as at 2 pm May 18th. Odds may now differ.

The Golden State Warriors have been terrific at Chase Center this year, covering the spread in 60% of their games and winning all 6 of their home games in the playoffs. Their NET rating dramatically increases from -8.2 on the road to an incredible 14.2 at home. They have the tools on both sides of the floor to get the job done, and the home fans should provide a huge boost once again.

The only way to stop the Dallas Mavericks is by playing elite defence, which is exactly what the Warriors have been doing all season. It’s difficult to stop Luka from getting his points, but don’t forget, this is a team that managed to stop Lebron 3 times in the finals in his prime, and their core hasn’t changed. The Warriors have experience, grit and the pieces needed to be able to counter the Mavs’ slow-moving offence, and I have no problem backing the Under here.

Draymond Green has been Golden State’s top rebounder in their tough series against the Grizzlies, averaging 8.7 rebounds per game, but in each game that he has seen increased minutes, this number has gone way over. Steve Kerr will certainly ask a lot out of Draymond this series, as he is their defensive centrepiece, and you can bet he will be out there a lot. In his last game against the Grizzlies, Green had 15 rebounds in 39 minutes of action, and I’m backing that to happen again.

The main key to the Warriors winning this series is always going to be stopping Luka Doncic. Luka averages around 90 touches per game, ranking him 5th in the tournament, but his time of possession is by far the largest at 9.7 seconds. Most of the Warriors’ defensive plan will be to pressure Luka as much as possible and force him to make mistakes. Luka has averaged 5.3 turnovers per game in all 3 of the Mavs’ losses last series, and I’m expecting more of the same tonight.
