The Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers meet in Game Six of the Western Conference semi-finals on Friday night. After some inconsistent effort from the Lakers in Game Five, the pressure is on to close this out before the intimidating prospect of a Game Seven in San Francisco on Sunday.
Right up until tip-off, the focus is going on the availability of Anthony Davis. It was reported he avoided concussion symptoms after an elbow from Kevon Looney on Wednesday, but his status is yet to be confirmed. Delayed concussions are possible, which could rule Davis out. If he’s unavailable, the Warriors are massive favourites for this game.

Only one of Golden State’s three losses in this series was by more than 10 points. It was a three-point loss for the Dubs in the previous game in Los Angeles. Their offence has found something of a groove by playing at a better pace. These teams like to get out and run, which has contributed to both teams scoring 100+ points in four of the five games so far. Golden State’s 97 points in Game Three (when they shot 29.5% from three) is the only time either team has failed to reach triple figures.
If anything, the teams are looking to push the pace more and more as this series progresses. Golden State has largely moved away from playing Looney and Draymond Green together. Gary Payton II has been inserted into the starting five with a sizeable impact.
The Lakers are leaving Payton open as if he’s a non-shooter. Sure, he’s not Steph Curry or Klay Thompson, but he’s more than capable of knocking down the odd corner trey and has been a force on the boards. Golden State will often use him as a screener for Curry, too, forcing Davis to defend the pick-and-roll.
Payton has played over 20 minutes in each of the last two games. He’s passed this alternate points line in the last four. He has a huge role to play if the Warriors are to force a Game Seven. Avoid foul trouble and he should cruise past this after double-digit scoring in the last two.
Golden State is also dependent on Green playing as well as he did on Wednesday. The former Defensive Player of the Year was exceptional at the end of the first-round against the Kings, and delivered a gem of a performance in Game Five, being aggressive as a scorer and playmaker while playing typically elite defence.
Green has exceeded this points, rebounds and assists line in three of the last four games. While another 20-point night is unlikely, he gets enough boards and dimes to land this over even if he scores closer to 10 points.
