The Los Angeles Lakers carry a 2-1 series advantage over the Memphis Grizzlies ahead of their matchup at Crypto.com Arena on Monday night. Los Angeles won Game Three in blowout fashion, with an emphatic 35-9 lead at the end of the first quarter meaning the game was only briefly competitive in the second half.
Ja Morant returned with a spectacular 45 points, keeping the Lakers on their toes in the third and fourth quarters, but it wasn’t enough. Memphis also played a significant portion of the game without Dillon Brooks after his below-the-belt shot on LeBron James. Brooks has avoided suspension for this one.

The Grizzlies are not going to shoot as poorly in Game Four, but there are also very real matchup issues for Taylor Jenkins to overcome. This Lakers defence has been elite since their trade deadline overhaul. Xavier Tillman’s big showing in Game Two was always likely to be an anomaly in this series. Anthony Davis is marshalling the paint, while Brooks continues to shoot them out of games.
At the other end, Memphis becomes vulnerable if Brooks’ minutes are cut, as it leaves Morant and Desmond Bane accompanied by either a poor defender in Luke Kennard or another small guard in Tyus Jones. The Grizzlies’ frontcourt injuries are hurting them, and it is giving Jenkins much less flexibility than he needs.
A huge element in the Lakers’ surge has been the play of Austin Reaves. Playing himself into the core of Darvin Ham’s rotation, Reaves has had a couple of quiet games, but he has still been efficient. His minutes will remain high, even if Ham is forced to tweak his rotation.
This series looks to be heading in the Lakers’ direction. They are rightly favoured at home, and should take a commanding 3-1 lead. Reaves is going to have a role to play – he’s passed this alternate points line in every game since March 3rd.
All eyes will again be on the duel between Brooks and LeBron. James unquestionably came out on top a couple of days ago. With Jarred Vanderbilt registering in the low-twenties in minutes, James has been playing some five and been impactful on the glass against a Grizzlies team missing two of its three first-choice bigs.
James has averaged over 10.6 rebounds per game in this series. He has had seven or more boards in all four games against the Grizz this season, and that trend is unlikely to change here.
