The Memphis Grizzlies host the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night. Memphis is looking to bounce back after a blowout loss to the Mavericks, which saw them fall to 2-1. Brooklyn has a 1-1 record to start the year, but is clearly a roster working through plenty of flaws.
Seth Curry and T.J. Warren remain out for the road team, while Memphis is waiting on news of Dillon Brooks’ availability. The hosts are without Jaren Jackson Jr, Danny Green and Ziaire Williams.

Priced as 1.5-point favourites, the Grizzlies have a clear identity around their superstar in Ja Morant. Brooklyn’s blueprint is much murkier, with Steve Nash yet to settle on a balanced rotation around his Big Three. Memphis has posted wins over New York and Houston in the early going, and has seen Morant put in some epic performances yet again. The Grizzlies broke out last season and look set to continue at that level this term.
Memphis went 31-16 against the spread at home last season. Despite a wildly disappointing campaign featuring an unhealthy amount of off-court drama, Brooklyn was 24-18-1 against the spread on the road.
Morant is averaging 34.3 points per game this season. He is a nightmare matchup for any opponent, but particularly so for Brooklyn. Ben Simmons will inevitably take the assignment on occasion, but the Nets have struggled to protect the interior. The Nets rank in the bottom 10 in opponent shots at the rim. Playing Nic Claxton with Simmons produces all manner of spacing issues, but they need that size together against Morant.
Partly because of Morant’s pressure on the defence, Memphis is also generating a bucket load of three-point shots. Brooklyn hasn’t done well at defending the three-point line thus far. While some of this can be attributed to poor luck, it is also a symptom of their lacklustre defence overall.
The Grizzlies won both of these contests in 2021-22, and by a comfortable margin in both instances. A lot has changed for the Nets since then, of course, with the Simmons trade and further changes to the roster, but they are no better equipped to deal with these Grizzlies. Memphis has become one of the toughest places to visit in the Association.
Brooklyn’s offence should be productive here, with Memphis’ defence limited without Jackson. Even following a porous defensive showing against Dallas, though, the Grizz have good defensive pedigree after ranking fourth on that side of the ball last season.
The Nets have the greater star power, but Memphis is the better of these two teams. There is always a risk that Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving get hot and carry the Nets to a win – that’s a risk worth taking here. Memphis are a good bet at -1.5.
