It’s been a rather slow start for the Minnesota Timberwolves, as they find themselves 9th in the west with 2 wins and 2 losses. Their only 2 wins so far have come against the Oklahoma City Thunder – one of the weakest teams in the NBA, by a margin of 7 and 10 respectively. They lost to the Utah Jazz by 132-126, and are coming off their most recent loss to the San Antonio Spurs two days ago.
The Timberwolves certainly had high expectations heading into the season, especially because of the Rudy Gobert blockbuster trade, but it hasn’t worked out the way they had hoped. Despite having one of the most talented rosters in the league, the Wolves are averaging 115.8 points per game (14th in NBA), whilst allowing 115.3. Their 3-point shooting has been terrible, making just 28.7% of their shots, including their most recent game where they shot 8/31 (25.8%). Ouch!
However, the San Antonio Spurs are straying from the tanking game plan this season, winning and covering the spread in 3 out of their first 4 games. After losing to the Charlotte Hornets in their season-opener by 129-102, the Spurs went out on a road trip and silenced everybody, including myself. They beat the Pacers, 76ers and Timberwolves so far, and are looking to go back home riding a 4-game winning streak.
The biggest reason behind the Spurs’ early success has been their youth and speed. With a pace rating of 102.7, they are 4thin the league in that regard and are making 13 threes per game. The Spurs also play team basketball, which is nothing new for this organization, but with such a young squad, it is quite surprising to see, especially the 30.0 assists per game (1st in NBA).

The Timberwolves are heavy favourites to win tonight’s encounter at 1.23 odds, whilst the Spurs are valued at 4.25. The spread is set at 9.0 points, and I see some solid value in backing the Spurs tonight.
Let’s face it, the Spurs might very well turn out to be one of the teams that have a hot start but quickly burn out. Still, it’s always a good idea to use the heat whilst it’s there, especially against struggling teams. They are playing a fast-paced and exciting style of basketball resulting in 103.5 possessions and a lot of points each game. Their defence has left a lot o be desired, but against a team with chemistry issues like the Wolves, this might not be an issue.
Backing the Spurs to win at 4.25 odds is tempting, but the +9.0 points in the handicap market are even more so. I’m backing the Spurs to cover!
