Orlando Magic vs Charlotte Hornets Best Bet: Monday, November 14th

The Orlando Magic take on the Charlotte Hornets for the second time this season at Amway Center. Their first encounter in late October was a dominant win for the Magic and the bookmakers expect them to get it done again. Will the Hornets bounce back or will the Magic gain the 2-0 lead in the season series?

Orlando Magic vs Charlotte Hornets Preview

Mon 14 Nov. 23:00 (UK Time)

The Orlando Magic haven’t had a successful start to the season by any means, and as a very young team, nobody really expected them to come out of the gates swinging. With 4 wins and 9 losses, they are in 13th place in the eastern conference. But they have won 3 of their last 5 games and are on an impressive 2-game winning streak at home. They are coming off a 114-97 victory against the Phoenix Suns with a balanced scoring effort and an exceptional 45.5% from behind the 3-point line.

Their style of play is about what you’d expect from such a young team, with the team often struggling to find their offence, averaging 110.4 ppg (22nd in the NBA) with just 21.2 assists per game. However, this trend has changed in their last 5 games, and their scoring averages have increased to 117.5 (5th in NBA). Their defence, on the other hand, has been surprisingly okay. They are ranking 17th in defensive rating this season, allowing 112.4 points per game and keeping opponents to 45.5% from the field. The Magic have yet to win a game on the road this year, but they’ve been solid at home, winning 4 of their 7 games.

The Charlotte Hornets have expectedly had a poor start to the season too, but I doubt anyone predicted it would be this bad. With just 3 wins and 11 losses, the Hornets are 14th in the Eastern Conference with little hope of moving up. They are now riding an 8-game losing streak and coming off a gutting 132-115 against the Miami Heat. Injuries have played their part, but even with Lamelo and Scary Terry back, they don’t seem like a playoff-worthy team. Gordon Hayward and Cody Martin are out for this one, whilst Dennis Smith Jr is listed as ‘doubtful’ for tonight.

Last season, the Hornets were one of the most exciting offensive sides in the entire league, but this year it’s been a trainwreck. They are ranked 28th in offensive rating after 14 games, averaging just 108.7 points per game and a 3-point percentage of 33.0%. Their defence has been slightly better, ranking 19th in defensive rating and allowing 114.7 points per game with an opponent field goal percentage of 46.7% (16th in NBA).

Orlando Magic vs Charlotte Hornets Best Bet

The bookies have the Orlando Magic at 1.87 odds to win whilst the Charlotte Hornets are available at 2.11. The spread is set at 1.5 points, and this is where the value is hiding.
The Orlando Magic have been very good at Amway Center. They have covered the spread in 6 of their 7 home games this year, placing them atop the league in this regard, right next to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Meanwhile, the Hornets have been in very poor shape on the road, winning just 2 of their 6 games, and their 8-game losing streak is unlikely to end tonight. The last time these two teams faced off was just 2 weeks ago when the Orlando Magic took the 113-93 win in this same building. Though another 20-point victory might be a bit too much to ask, I’m backing the Magic to cover the meagre 1.5-point spread.
