History Says.....Stay Away From the Front of the Market at the World Cup

Has it been profitable to bet against World Cup tournament favourites? How have the nations at the front of the outright winner betting market performed?

In this article:

In this analysis I will be looking at the performance of nations at the front of World Cup outright betting. By ‘front of the market’ I am talking about nations entering the World Cup at odds shorter than 10.0. I will be looking at how these nations performed in both the 1X2 and Asian handicap markets before looking at how tournament favourites performed in the same markets.

Betting results have been determined by betting at even stakes, i.e betting a single unit on each possible outcome in a given betting market. I have used average odds adjusted to standard bookmaker commission of 4.5% with odds provided from my own archives with gaps filled by data from BetExplorer.

I will then close the article by looking through the history of World Cup winner odds from 2002 through the 2018 tournament.

Betting Against the Front of the Market

Let’s jump straight into it. First let’s take a look at how nations at the front of the market have performed at World Cups.

Across the last five World Cups (since 2002), there have been 16 nations that have entered a World Cup campaign at shorter than odds of 10.0. These are:

Table 1: Nations starting a World Cup at odds shorter than 10.0 since 2002

So how have teams at the front of the market performed against teams at odds 10.0 or longer since 2002?

In the 1X2 market, betting against front of the market teams has returned a handsome profit since 2002. Betting at even stakes on teams at odds 10.0 or longer vs teams shorter than odds of 10.0 has seen a profit of +21.81 units from 74 matches, a return of +29.5%.

Backing the draw has likewise been profitable in these matches, returning a profit of +4.49 units.

These results are likewise reflected in the Asian handicap market.

Betting on Tournament Favourites

Let’s take a look at how tournament favourites have performed in both the 1X2 and Asian handicap betting markets.

Firstly, here are the tournament favourites dating back to 2002.

2006Brazil4.0
2010Spain5.50

As we saw in previous articles, it has been profitable to bet against defending World Cup champions, betting on underdogs receiving at least +1 in the Asian handicap market and betting against top ranked FIFA nations. These results are likewise reflected in the results when betting against pre tournament favourites.

Betting against tournament favourites in the 1X2 market since 2002 has returned a huge profit of +27.98 units from just 24 units. The bulk of the damage was done betting against Germany in 2018, with opposing tournament favourites returning a profit in all but Brazil in 2014.

Historical World Cup Winner Odds

Before I close this analysis, let’s take a look through the history of World Cup winner odds, from 2002 onwards. The odds referenced are taken from my own personal outright odds archive.

2002 World Cup Winner Odds

Coming off their disappointment of 1998, eventual 2002 winners Brazil entered the World Cup at odds of 11.0 to claim the trophy. Their opponents in the final Germany began the tournament even further adrift at odds of 15.0.

It was not a great tournament for nations that began as the favourites. Argentina began at odds of 6.0 and failed to make the knockout stage, while Italy at odds of 8.0 were eliminated in the Round of 16 and France at odds of 9.0 failed to win a match in the World Cup defence.

The biggest surprise of the tournament was Senegal, beginning the tournament at odds of 301.0 and reaching the quarter finals while the USA at odds of 181.0 did likewise.
