UFC 278 Picks: Saturday, August 20th

With the main and co-main events already covered, we turn our attention to the rest of the card looking for the best value bets of the event. Don’t worry, of course I covered the Jose Aldo fight first, but there are 2 more solid value bets you should definitely consider. Read the article below and feel free to share your opinion on the fights.

In this article:

Jose Aldo vs Merab Dvalishvili Preview & Pick

What more is there to say about the legend that is Jose Aldo that already hasn’t been said? 31 wins 7 losses, fighting since 2004, former featherweight champ and almost Bantamweight champ. 17 KO/TKO wins, 13 decisions and currently riding a 3-fight winning streak. Despite all the years in the game, and a heavy slump after the McGregor fight, Aldo got right back in the title race and is now 3rd in the Bantamweight rankings.

But Merab Dvalishvili is now on an 8-fight winning streak and coming off a TKO win over Marlon Moraes. He is 6th in the division rankings and looking to earn himself a potential title shot by taking out one of the true legends in the game. With 8 wins and just 2 losses since joining the UFC, Merab is definitely a serious title contender. Having never been knocked out and at 31 years of age, he’ll be fighting for years to come.

But who are we backing to take the victory this Saturday night? Aldo is the underdog at 2.14 odds at Pinnacle, whilst Dvalishvili is available at 1.85 at Unibet.

Aldo has been getting better and better as his career has progressed, and even his recent losses were against the top tier of UFC competition such as Petr Yan, Alex Volkanovski and Max Halloway. His striking technique, volume, power and cardio are a perfect combination of skills to take down the Russian. He is also slightly taller, has a longer reach, and at 2.14 odds to win, he is holding some solid value. Back the former champ!

  • Selection: Jose Aldo to Win
  • Best Odds: 2.14 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 5/10

Odds as at 02:00 pm on August 18th, 2022. Odds may now differ.

Yanan Wu vs Lucie Pudilova Preview & Pick

The second pick for our UFC 278 package will feature Yanan Wu taking on Lucie Pudilova in the main card of the women’s Bantamweight division. Whilst neither of these fighters are ranked and I don’t expect the most interesting affair, there is some value to be found here, namely in backing Pudilova to win.

Yanan Wu is only 26 years old and her UFC journey has been difficult. Only 1 win and 4 losses since joining the organisation, and has fought only once per year during her 5-year stint. She is coming off a convincing decision loss to Mayra Bueno Silva in April this year, and I don’t think she will be able to make the necessary changes in such a short time period in order to be able to win.

On the other side, we have the 28-year-old Lucie Pudilova, a Muay Thai specialist out of the Czech Republic who is making her UFC return after a 2-year stint at OKTAGON. Let’s face it, her first UFC campaign was underwhelming, losing to Antonina Shevchenko and Justine Kish, but she has managed to bounce back, winning 5 of her last 6 fights. The fact that this is her comeback debut in the UFC is a huge motivating factor, and she is facing a mediocre opponent this time around. I’m backing Pudilova to complete the comeback and get the job done.

  • Selection: Lucie Pudilova to Win
  • Best Odds: 1.83 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 6/10

Odds as at 02:00 pm on August 18th, 2022. Odds may now differ.

Daniel da Silva vs Victor Altamirano Preview & Pick

The 5th (total) and final pick of UFC 278 is going to be in the early-prelim Flyweight bout between Daniel da Silva and Victor Altamirano.

In Daniel da Silva, we have a 26-year-old young fighter coming out of Brazil who doesn’t really seem ready to compete in the top-tier competition that is the UFC. His previous record whilst fighting in his home country was 11-1, with his only loss coming due to a shoulder injury. But since joining the UFC in October 2021 he has lost both of his fights. The first one was a TKO loss to Jeff Molina in the second round where he was only able to produce 31 strikes (20 significant), whilst the other was a submission (kneebar) loss to Francisco Figueiredo. Da Silva simply doesn’t seem ready to compete in the UFC yet and I don’t see this campaign going his way.

On the other side, we have Victor Altamirano, the 31-year-old winner of Dana White’s Contender Series last year. Altamirano has won 4 of his last 5 fights and is coming off a split decision loss to Carlos Hernandez. He produces 5.97 strikes per minute, compared to da Silva’s 3.40 and only absorbs 5.23 compared to 7.36 on the other side. Whilst he doesn’t have the most striking power, da Silva’s chin is worrisome even at 26 years of age, Altamirano has a solid chance of getting a KO/TKO win. That said, even his striking volume alone will be enough to get him the division victory.

  • Selection: Victor Altamirano to Win
  • Best Odds: 1.61 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 8/10

Odds as at 02:00 pm on August 18th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
