UFC 280 Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev: October 22nd

The main event of UFC 280 features Charles Oliviera taking on Islam Makhachev for the UFC Lightweight title. Both fighters are on impressive winning streaks, but there can only be one champion at the end of the event. Who will take home the gold?

In this article:

Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev Preview

The former UFC Lightweight division champion Charles Oliveira is on the warpath looking to regain the title after losing it back in May due to not making weight. He faced and defeated Justin Gaethje at UFC 274, extending his winning streak to 10, his record for most finishes to 10 and his record for most submissions to 16. Having now defeated the 2nd and 3rd contenders in the division, it’s on to number 4 in Islam Makhachev.

Charles Oliviera has been in the UFC since 2010 and possesses an impressive MMA record of 33 wins and 8 losses. He is mainly known as an elite grappler and BJJ wiz with 21 career victories by submission, but he has also shown many improvements in his striking game, outstriking 4 of his last 5 opponents. He is a very durable fighter, which we have seen on multiple occasions, refusing to give up even when his chin is rocked, and he uses his grappling as both a defensive fall-back option and an offensive threat.

Meanwhile, Islam Makhachev has been making a name for himself in the UFC Lightweight division for the past 3 years, ploughing through opponents like a bulldozer. He is another terrific talent out of Dagestan, Russia, and at 30 years of age, he is in a terrific position to attack the title. Makhachev holds an MMA record of 22 wins and just 1 loss, with 14 wins coming via finish.

He has faced, Bobby Green, Dan Hooker, Thiago Mosies and Drew Dober in the last year and a half, and has finished all of them. It’s no surprise that Islam is also an elite offensive grappler, averaging 3.41 takedowns per 15, and he doesn’t absorb a lot of shots at just 0.84 per minute. His top pressure is suffocating and his ground and pound is equally dangerous, and it’s no surprise that he’s able to finish opponents so easily. But what do the bookmakers say?

Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev Betting Odds

Once again, the bookmakers are placing Charles Oliveira as the underdog at 2.62 odds, whilst Islam Makhachev is listed at 1.53 odds. This accounts for a 38.2% win probability for the former champion, giving him a lot of betting value.

Yes, Makhachev is a terrific fighter, but he still has a lot to prove, having never fought for the title yet. So far, 63% of bettors are backing Oliviera to retain the title, with just 37% picking Makhachev. That said, there’s still a lot of time before the event, and I have no doubt the situation will change.
