For many, Jon Jones is the greatest and most gifted fighter the MMA world has ever seen. When you watch some of his old fights you can see that he has a head build for fighting. He became the youngest UFC champion ever at just 23 years old by defeating Mauricio Shogun Rua for the Light-Heavyweight title.

Jones spent the next decade dominating the UFC Light-Heavyweight division, defeating the best fighters Dana White had to offer including Rampage Jackson, Rashad Evans, Alex Gustaffson, Glover Teixeira and Daniel Cormier.

Jon Jones is known for being ruthless in the cage, using any and all (dirty) tactics to get the job done. His kicks are lethal and he is very hard to hit, absorbing just 2.22 strikes per minute. His masterclass performance against the dangerous Ciryl Gane was a perfect comeback after a 3-year absence from the sport. He seems to have adapted to the weight change well and his grappling looked better than ever.

Stipe Miocic UFC Stats & Form

Stipe Miocic UFC Stats
Strikes Landed Per Minute: 4.82
Striking Accuracy: 53%
Strikes Absorbed Per Minute: 3.82
Striking Defence: 54%
Takedown Average: 1.86
Takedown Accuracy: 34%
Takedown Defence: 68%
Submission Average: 0.0

One of the greatest heavyweights the UFC has ever seen, that’s the best way to describe this man. The former division champion won the title back in Fabricio Werdum back in 2016, making 3 consecutive defences afterwards against Alistair Overeem, Junior Dos Santos and Francis Ngannou.

He lost the title to Daniel Cormier in 2018, before coming back and reclaiming it in 2019. Miocic made another title defence in the trilogy against Cormier by unanimous decision but ultimately lost to Francis Ngannou via brutal KO in March 2021.

We haven’t seen Miocic in the cage for more than 2 and a half years and it’s a huge question of how he is going to look. Is he going to come back hungrier and better than ever? Is he going to be rusty? Has age caught up to him? Remember, Stipe just turned 41 in August and Jones just turned 36.

Stipe is a very mobile heavyweight with exceptional striking volume and great grappling. He has a much shorter wingspan than his opponent at UFC 295 by 10 centimetres. His movement has always been great for the heavyweight division, but he is facing a former Light-Heavyweight and I don’t see an advantage for him there.

UFC 295: What do the odds say?

At the moment, we only have UFC 295 Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic odds for the moneyline market with Jon Jones being heavily favoured at 1.25 odds at Bet365 and Stipe Miocic being priced at 4.00. You can also get Stipe to win at the highest odds of 4.20 at Unibet.

According to Unibet, 94% of bets are on Jones to win this one. The 1.25 odds next to his name suggest an 88% chance of victory. Whilst we all know how dangerous Jones is with his fight IQ, kicks and grappling, is he really going to be that dominant? We have just recently seen two huge upsets in the UFC with Sean O’Malley beating Aljamain Sterling by TKO and now Sean Strickland defeating Israel Adesanya by decision.

MMA is a cruel sport and one small mistake can be costly. Stipe has pulled off a lot of upsets in his career already, most recently the one against Francis Ngonnau and it wouldn’t be the first time something like this happens. Before everyone jumps, we aren’t comparing Jones to Francis, we are just considering the possibility that something like this can happen. Stipe Miocic is a dangerous man and this long layoff could prove to be beneficial. There is some value in backing him at 4.20 odds early.

Odds available as of September 15th st 2023. Odds may now differ.
