Max Holloway vs Arnold Allen Preview
Sun, Apr 16th TBD (UK time)
Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway returns to the octagon after almost a year hoping to bounce back against an up-and-coming fighter. He is coming off a unanimous decision loss against the division champion Alex Volkanovski, his 3rd against this fighter, and is the 2nd ranked fighter in the Featherweight division.
Halloway is 2-3 over the last 4 years with all 3 losses coming against Volkanovski, whilst his 2 wins have come against Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodrigues – the fighter who is set to fight for the belt next. Max is also the former champ with a hefty 23-7 record under his belt, taking down some of the biggest names in the division such as Jose Aldo, Charles Oliviera, Cub Swanson, and Brian Ortega.
He is known as primarily a striker who relies mainly on his boxing skills, movement and volume to get himself decision wins. He lands a whopping 7.24 strikes per minute but also absorbs 4.89. His gas tank is also a noteworthy weapon, as we have repeatedly seen him shine in 5-round fights, especially in the championship rounds. His chin has also withstood the test of time, having never been knocked out in his career despite absorbing a lot of strikes. Max has been at the top of the division for a reason and he is the more experienced fighter in this one.
Arnold Allen is on a 10-fight winning streak since joining the UFC 7 years ago and is coming off a victory over Calvin Kattar. At 29 years old, Allen is the younger and less experienced fighter here, holding a 19-1 record. He has some solid power in his hands for the division, putting away Dan Hooker in 1 round via TKO, but when facing a chinny opponent like Halloway, I’m not sure this will be an option. He throws a lot less than his opponent here with 3.40 strikes per minute but also absorbs a lot less with 2.25. He is the shorter fighter but has a slight 2-centimetre reach advantage.
Max Holloway vs Arnold Allen Best Bet
I like the kicks and power Allen has, but that’s about it. He doesn’t have much a grappling advantage and I expect most of the fight to be standing up. This is where Holloway’s experience comes into play. Holloway has already fought in a lot of 5-rounders before, whereas Allen is very inexperienced. Max has the striking movement, volume and gas tank to get himself another decision victory, and this is the most likely outcome in my eyes. Allen is a very exciting fighter, but I question his baility to go toe-to-toe with Max for 5 rounds and come out on top.
